I have a lab who's 15 months old. I mainly plan to hunt her with pheasants. I plan on taking her to a game farm this weekend. She doesn't have any professional training. Only the training her an I have done arounf the yard and out in a small field by ourselves. I've never used a check cord before. DO you guys think I should be using a check cord whilel I hunt her this first time. (She didn't like dragging a rope in the yard (she wants to stop and pick it up)).
Thanks for your input,

I guess to me it kind of depends what you want to use the cord for? If she is obedient in the yard and fields you've trained in then I wouldn't see an advantage to it. I have pointers and have used the check cord in the first few intro's to birds, but only to keep the dog from pouncing the bird after it points. Not sure if that's an issue with a lab, since it should flush it out anyway. If the purpose of the check cord is to keep the dog from running off, then it may be a bit early to be taking the dog to the field. If the check cord is for other reasons, then you may want it. Depending on where you are with your training, if the dog has never had a bird shot over it, she may run rather than retrieve once she gets that first bird in her mouth. Doesn't sound like she will hunt with the cord on her anyway. That may be your deciding factor.
Cord or no cord, have fun with your hunting dog!

I'm with wheels, If you feel she'll may need it bring it along.
I like to train my dogs with a E-collar, no cord to yank, just a button to push.
