I took boths G.S.P. pups to a shooting preserve and got them on quail. One dog did great. He did exactly what he should have done 1st time out.

The other acted a little timid when after I had them chasing a bird fired my shot gun. I only fired the shot gun after I had repeatedly shot my blank gun whil they were chasing birds.

My question is, I need to really work on conditioning 1 dog to the gun. Any suggestions? I thought I took enough prep steps but obviously not if 1 of the 6 month old pups is nervous around the sound of the shot gun.

After I saw the 1 pups reaction, I did not fire the gun again and we went back to finding birds and getting them excited about it again.

Boy It sounds like you skipped steps 1-5 and went stright to steps 5-10 I hope this was not the case and the pup is fine now. The gun is the most important of steps to do corectly.

After going back to basics I took the boys out to a game farm again. Numerous points and not 1 ounce of gun shyness.

You got to love it when a plan comes together.

That's great Ivy! Sometimes it takes months to work that gun shyness out and sometimes it doesn't matter what you do,You have a gun shy dog.
Glad to hear the plan came together.

Thanks.

I did kick my-self though. We came on a chucker in some low grass. Both pups went on point. There was a late afternoon sun on the dogs. You could see the chucker 5 feet away from both dogs.

And I left the camera in the truck.

DOH!
