I have a yellow lab who turns two the first week in June. She is on her thrid cycle. When a dog goes into heat, I was told this.....they're in heat one week, typically bleed the second week and then they're still in heat the third week. The current cylce went like this....thie first week she bleed lightly, the second was heavy and this week has been spotty with each day getting lighter. Is this typical?
Thanks for your insight,

You might want to post this one on the General Discussion page, because hunting season isn't here yet, and most people are not looking at this page right now.
Our resident Vet, "Vetspet", (Dr. Steve), would be able to answer your question...as would several other dog owners on this site.
My girl is fixed, so I can't help you with this one...sorry.

Sounds typical to me.

A dogs heat cycle is generally 21 days, sometime more sometimes less. When the discharge goes from red to clear your female is ready to be bred.Don't waste your money by going to the vet to get a "smear". Most of the time the female can be bred on the 9, 11, and 13 day of the heat cycle when she first started spotting. An experienced stud dog will know when she is ready but introducing a stud dog too early can result in a bad experience for the stud dog when he gets bit by the female resulting in a male who is mating shy because he had a bad experience when an owner introduced the dog too early. A female dog is starting to get ready when she starts moving her tail to one side and starts back up to the male. Remember one thing. The size of a little depends on how many eggs the female ovulated NOT the potentcy of the male. If a female only sheds 3 eggs, she can be bred by a male dog 20 times and she is only going to have 3 pups.
