I'm going to be picking up a new golden retriever this summer, and am wondering what is a good book to get to learn how to train the dog myself? The dog will be a family/hunting dog. Mostly for ruffed grouse and pheasant. I'm not interested in any field trials, or anything of that sort. Just so it would be a good hunting dog.

I would have to recommend meeting with a trainer and see if you can share in the training. I made a deal with a trainer near me to work his dogs and mine for $20 a day. This just helps them offset there expenses. Works out pretty nice.

Bill Tarrants "Hey pup Fetch it up" or Rich Wolters if you want to try his system.

"The 10 Minute Retriever" by John and Amy Dahl was recommended to me.

Good luck with your pup. I'm picking up a black lab pup tomorrow :rockit:

I would suggest 10 minute retriever as well and for a complete training program I suggest Smartworks by Evan Graham.
