I know some folks stay over night (sleep) in there icehouse how can this be done safely with the heater going (carbon posioning) always hear of some dying every year. Are there certian pre-cautions? I always wanted to try this.

Fish Houses people stay in have heaters that are direct vented outside like your gas fireplaces at home. There is nothing better than to be awakened from a deep slumber by the rattle wheel clanging away with a nice walleye pulling on the other end!

I have a battery powered carbon monoxide detector. Forty dollars is a small price to pay for you and your friends lives. Everyone sleeps alot better having it. A couple of pointers, Keep the detector away from extreme cold. Bring it home when the house is empty. Car exaust, and ice augers, will ruin the element in the detector, if repeated exposures occur. Put it outside till your house clears out from drilling. I wish that the state dnr would make it law to have these in sleeper houses. It breakes my heart to here of the senseless deaths from CO poisionings. It happens every year up here in MN..

To go with what the others posted, I always keep a few fresh air vents open. In my camper they are along the floor by the heater so that the heater can suck the fresh air to burn. Take the square inches of your burner, you should have that many square inches of fresh air vent. This along with detectors and you're good to go.

We burn wood in NW Ontario. We always keep a window cracked a hair for combustion air. We're getting close for shack hauling with some real cold temps coming.
