I am asuming wind dosent have really any effect on the way fish move under the ice?

I dont think the wind itself has an effect but the cause of the wind. Different weather patterns, pressure will cause the fish to react differently.

If you mean wind velocity, I'm sure it affects fishermen more than fish. LOL. But I always pay attention to wind direction, just because it shows weather patterns, which do affect fishing. You know the pattern, SE-E approaching front (can be good), NE-N-NW passing cold front(not my favorite), W-SW-S steady weather or warm front (best). Not 100% but what is? Plus it gives me a good excuse if I don't catch anything. Wind was in the wrong direction.

Don't assume the water doesn't move under the ice, it does. This can be seen anywhere there is a narrows. It's freezes later, and the ice is always thinner due to the water movement.
I'm not serious enough about ice fishiing to tell you to fish upwind or downwind, but I don't expect safe ice anywhere the water movement is restricted, and therefore moving faster.

I think the water movement in the narrows is caused by something other than wind when the lake is iced over. There may just be a natural current. For the wind to effect the water movement it owuld have to come in contact with it.

A number of years ago I was fishing Lake Erie on the west end when it was froze over with about 18" But the East end was open. The wind on the open water would setup currents under the ice. I was jigging in 30 fow and the line would be pulled to one side at about a 30 degree angle and then after a 1/2 hour it would swing to the other side. Came back to the same spot the next day and we had 12"

If so, why is the ice so thin under and near the bridges crossing Devils Lake?
When there is open water there, one can see the movement of the water. It's downwind.
Those areas are the last to freeze over, the first to open, and the ice is dangerous all winter.

When fishing temperatures drop below freezing, fish open water using spinning reels because the smaller guides on plug casting reels tend to freeze up.

Actually, I think that the wind has an effect under the ice as it has in open water.

I have fished ice too many times, and having to move to the windward side of the lake to catch fish, to not believe it.
I think that the wind sets up currents in the lake due to the pressure on the ice and causes the fish to behave in such a fashion.

Take care

I 'm guessing Yes . But try to figure that one out ? After a strong wind during the day, come late evening when the wind is calm you can here the ice cracking big time ! There must be pressures on the lake in high winds ? I'm talking big lakes.

I too fallow the line of thinking that fluctuating pressures on the ice does effect the moods of fish under the ice. Add fluctuating barometric effects and one may argue that it is as unsettled, or more so, than a cold front may make fish in the summer.

I have noticed diminished success during strong winds on the ice even on rivers. Even on a sheltered area the winds whipping up above for me spells poor fishing in comparison to more stable winds.
