OK, I have both these units and I am asked everyday which one is better?

Any ideas how we could do a side by side test? I think it would be fun and informative.

If we can come up with a list I will do the testing. (Once the Mud freezes)

somewhere in the iceleaders web site out of the midwest i did see a comparison one time. if i can get the web site address i'll post it, they are sponsered by marcum so it may be a little pro marcum but if i remember right it was interesting

This topic has been pounded to death for years and I suspect primarily from Marcum shills as they seem to be the first to insist that Marcum is the best and they are real he-men for owning one. lol The facts are, both units work more than adequately and neither will make the fish bite.
This topic has actually become a bonifide sleeper. Zzzzzzz...

Vex is absolutly correct on this one..I will second that!He nailed it!The argument is old and tired.Marcum or Vex~vex or Marcum~~Which is better??????Marcum's win hands down every time and thats that.Nuff said.....Us "he men" all have them...Wanna join our ranks??...lol.Of course I will admit to seeing someone with a vex catch a fish now and then so who knows....lol.......Len.

That is my point. I am not saying one is better than the other, but I hear the arguments all the time. Why cant we as fisherman do an unbiased test?

I would like to do it, but struggle with what tests to do. How do we prove one or the other??

I have a fl 18, but let the #s speak for them self the marcum has more power better target seperation, any were in the depth zone zoom,5 and 10 ft, super fine line .75 seperation on whole screen, dual beam transducer, carry case, digital charger, for 479.00 i am getting one as soon as i sell my vexilar.

For what I have in my Vex FL18 I dont think it would be a 479.00 improvement to go to the Marcum. I am thinking of taking the color graph from my boat and getting the ice pack from Lowrance and using that. I hear the color units are great for icing

BOTH OK

seen this matchup on every fishing site every year..
a flasher is a flasher I have the vex FL 18 but if I had the marcum
I would be happy too, either way they are alot of money
so anyone who has either basically has the same thing a FLASHER
they both work never heard anything bad about either one
good luck with the test what ever you are trying to prove
why would you have one of each extra cash to spend

I studied both the Vex.FL18 and the Macrum LX 3 units exclusivley before I bouight mine. I had even used BOTH on the ice and was well aware of the service both companies offer.I put some time and thought into which one to buy as I will probably have it for many many years.Plus to me $400.00 is a lot for a flasher!..After all the homework and time spent "shopping" I bought the Marcum LX 3...It is all they promised and I love it.I LOVE the ability to move the zoom up and down. Its "killer" for suspended crappies I target. In my eyes the Marcums are the better buy for many reasons..I imagine some guys have never used one nor seen their level of quality..But if your shopping at least give them a look.
BUT then the eight (?) year old Zercom Color Point that I bought for $200.00 used on Ebay about four years ago has also worked flawlessly. It has also helped me ice lots of fish for a few $$$.(it is also for sale on the swap board)~So its just a matter of what you need and what you have to spend...
...Fish hard!!!!.........................>))))*>Wahoo

I did some homework as well before purchasing and after reading the infisherman article and google search information on this topic, I bought the Marcum 3. The biggest reason I went with the Marcum is because of their technology to block interference with other locators, if you fish nearby others that are using locators. Blog after blog mentioned this, along with the separation, so those are two big reasons why I went with Marcum. A couple of articles mentioned the Lowrance unit had problems in the extreme cold. Technology is constantly changing and I am sure Vexilar will get the interference thing figured out, so they don't lose so many sales!

I have one side by side you might be interested in. My buddy was fishing with his vex and he said he couldn't see his lure the last two feet we think he had a rock somewhere off to one side so he had a dead zone. Put my LX5 in the same hole with the narrow tranducer angle on and had no problem reading bottom.
