My buddy and I have a couple days to boondoggle and are heading north. Wondering if anyone can offer some direction to put us on the ice for a day or two. What's biting and where? Realistically we don't have much hope with this cold weather, but maybe someone knows something and is willing to share. Thanks in advance!

what are you looking to go after? Walleye? Lakers? Crappie?- let us know and maybe we can help out...

Thanks for the note - we're geared for Walleye or Crappie. Usually have some reports from our friends that have been fishing, but everyone is unusually quiet. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

By some reports, Red lake is doing well for slabs and eyes, and Island lake is doing well for the Duluth area- if you can find 'em. It's tough to find any reliable info though 'cause it's been so cold and last weekend was the Super Bowl. I wish you luck!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Spent a couple hours in the local house tonight and had 4 small crappie - pretty much the norm for the past few cold nights. I'm guessing my bro will have better luck this weekend. May hit Red just to give it a shot - we'll see and I'll report. Thanks again.

I'd like to hear how you do on Red Lake if you go- I've been thinking about heading up there myself. Good luck!

Heading up to Red lake tomorrow.

From reports I've heard the walleye bite is good and picking up a few crappies too.

We ended up getting a last minute house on Red for Friday night out of Roger's Campground on the South end. Guide took us to our very nice 16' King Crow 1.8 miles out (due North). Arrived and were fishing in 11.5' of water by 3:30pm, and had our first walleye by 3:40pm. We had our limit of 2 each (all perfectly sized 16"-17") by 6pm. All told we had 17 walleye in our 18 hours on the lake, but no crappie. Woke up early on Saturday morning and my buddy landed a 27" about 5:30am - what a wake up call.

Stopped by Mille Lacs on the way home and fished with some friends for an hour on Saturday evening. With nothing happening we headed home to Hutchinson. Good fun - thanks for the input.
