Last night I took the 4-wheeler out to clear a skate area for the kids. About 10" of snow and about 6" of water below that on top of 12" plus of ice miserable getting around. It has not been above freezing for 2 to 3 weeks. It's been below zero. How does the water creep up? I know the snow insulates the ice but how does the water come up? Is it the pressure from the snow. It's more around the first 100 to 150 feet of shore.

I call it flooding. But it will happen when the ice isn't too thick when theres alot of new snow (xtra weight) YES that can be a mess! I have seen it so bad that it would flood the area where my fish house is when I drilled new holes that I would have to move it till it refroze ...

I believed it's caused by the weight of the snow that causes the ice to sag.

I have seen this in Iowa too. Makes a guy nervous as you cant see the ice under the snow. We never get much more than 1 foot of ice here so saftey is always a concern.
