See the article about the recovery of two ice fishermen from Lake Sakakawea, ND. Only in "Coal Country."

Sorry, I didn't say it's in today's online Bismarck Tribune.

What a sad story. You always hate to hear of something like this happening. Recently, in SD, there was a death on Lake Sinai where waterfowl had kept an area of the lake open for some time prior to the incident. The area was near the boat ramp where people went on, and only a thin layer of ice formed where the waterfowl had kept it open.

Just goes to show that no ice is 100% safe. I know this was a freak occurrence, given the large area affected by the methane gas, but Missouri River reservoir ice is simply too spooky for me to drive on with a vehicle. I know it's 2' in areas, but with changes in current and freak things like this, it's just not a chance I want to take.

I have been ice fishing on Lake Oahe and drilled 8" of ice and fished for the da. The next day, I re-opened the same holes and and there were only three inches. I don't like to drive on Oahe.

I was just watching the WCCO news, they did a story on thin ice/open spots that are kept thin/open from the over populaton carp. A few trucks and wheelers have gone through on this S. Mn lake because of the carp. The link should be on wcco.com in interested.
