ok I am ready to buy a new toy. I am looking into buy a new vexlar this ice season. Is there a big differrnce between the pro pac 2 and the genz pack. If I buy a genz pack with a 12 degree ducer could I change it to a 9/19 ducer? Or only on the pro pack 2. I fish in about 40 feet and less so is the 12 degree ok for my style.

I prefer the Genz packs. I have done some customizing to mine. I have used the 12o transducer for years and it has worked great from 5-50ft. I did purchase the 9/19o last year and like that alot. The 1 thing I would recommend would be to get the fl-18 or fl-20. That zoom is great. I use both and for just ice fishing prefer the fl-20. I have run my fl-20 on my boat this year and am not happy with it. The bottom lock feature that is on the fl-18 is needed on the fl-20 for open water use.

I have used all of the above, and regarding cone degrees, I think the wider is what I use the most, though most of mine is shallower water fishing.

I ended buying the Marcum LX-5, which has a dual beam 8degree and 20degree x-ducer. It switches with the push of a button. It also has the zoom, but you can adjust it to anywhere in the water column you want, not just the bottom. I really like it.

Buddies have FL8 and FL18 and FL20, and contrary to what some people will say (who say the Marcum will mess up the vex's signal, Marcum is more powerful) we can all use them in the same shack.

I really like the Marcum's case, which is basically more like the optional Vex enclosed case. My buddy with the FL20 said he would rather have the enclosed fabric case than the one he has now (not sure which one, but the most expensive one).

I know some people love the Vexilars, and I think they are great, and they will only get the Vex name, but there is another brand out for a bit of competition, if you want to check them out. Best thing is to get an on the ice demo, or at least compare them next to each other. Prices are comparable, and I like the Marcum case better, smaller and p0rotects it better, with easiet charging system I have ever seen.
