Looking for info/opinions on L.O.W. for this winter. I have gone on some "world class lakes" but due to not knowing the area, done very poorly. I know that there is no sure thing but a little research could be the diference between going to "Joes excellent fishing resort" and "Dave the duds hole in the dead sea". I have heard that Arnesons is a top notch outfit. We want to stay overnight on the ice on the weekend, four guys, bring us out and pick us up, meals and bait. I've been told that this is pretty standard with the better resorts. We don't expect a scuba diver to hook the fish on our lines but it would be a nice bonus:fishhit: .

Arnesons would be a good bet.
They fish alot of rock reefs. Lots of nice walleyes and the deeper mud produces jumbo perch and sauger.
We take sleds and portables out to the western reefs (same area that Arneson has houses) and do very well.
In my opinion, you'd be better off staying at the resort and have them take you out to the day fish houses instead of using a sleeper.
Chances are they could move you around a little easier to where the fish are biting.
We go the first or second week in March and usually do very well for numbers and size of fish.

Arnesons is a very good choice to spend your ice fishing trip with. I myself would rent a cabin there at arnesons, rather then spend all night on the lake. it seems that when the sun goes down you seldom catch fish. You could instead find some entertainment at the Sportsman or wigwam on most weekends....It should be a great winte on the big pond.... good luck Shane

I've never stayed at Arneson's, so I can't speak about them. I have stayed at Schuster's and Ballard's on the Rainy River near Wheelers Point, and have been happy with both. There are several resorts along that stretch including The Wigwam and Sportsman's Lodges. The nice thing is you can walk to all of these different resorts to check out their "watering holes".
I've never fished the lake at night, but I've been told that the walleyes and saugers do not bite at night only eelpout.
Regards,
Scott Lee
Since there is six times as much water as dry land on earth, any fool
can plainly see the good Lord meant for man to fish six times as much as he works.

7 or 8 years ago we spent 5 nights in a sleeper house. I believe the name of the place was fire and ice charters out of Baudette--excellent guys, excellent service. I don't know if they are still around, can't find them on the net. Fishing was excellent our biggest walleye came at night (29"), but it was the ONLY one after dark, still, kind of fun laying in bed with a pole in your hand. I had a great time, but if I went again I think I would get a cabin in town. Good luck.

I keep hearing from numerous people that a cabin at the resort beats the ice house sleepers all day long. Tis a good thing too, cause that's what we got!

Give Lake Oahe a try in the Mobridge, SD area up to Pollock, SD. I'm telling you, it's going to be some of the best walleye ice fishing the world this year for numbers and quality. I can't wait.
Here's a typical early season day.

OK Jimmy, I guess that is that. We chase walleye during the day and the local woman at night. Is there such a thing as catch and release? :rotfl: What would we do if we caught her??? Let her go and catch her again of course.

Depends on what we catch- she has to at least have teeth:grd: Is there a size limit?

Simply the best. Rent a cabin. You will be tired and once the sun goes down it's over. This outfit is aggressive and moving houses around daily. On a three day trip, someone in your party will bring in a trophy
walleye. Try Febuary, the Jumbo Perch run 14-17" alone.
Hint: Get the first transport out in the morning. Be at the Bar at 5:30 a.m. You will have to tip the driver to get a "hot house" meaning the house that has been bringing them in. We learned this years ago. 20 buck tip before the transport brings in fish. Just say, I want the best house, the hot house yesterday. If you go out later than 6:00 am. The transport picks up fisherman from other resorts and you will be pissed off. All the resorts on in Angle use this transport guy. I would stay at the there.

Cyrus Resort has always been a good spot. They also constantly move houses and have excellant moderen cabins with a good restaurant and bar.
