I noticed today that many of the local ponds are frozen over. I know that the lakes can't be far behind! I suppose I will have to dig my portable out of the barn and get things working soon. They say that you have 86 things to do and what you are doing now is number 87.

Yeah, I just got in from Bow Hunting the rut here in Wi and I noticed a small pond had tiny ice forming on the edges, they say it suppose to be a mild winter but I dont know about that it seems it has been a lot colder than last year so far, Im hoping for the best!

Streams are starting to ice up now! Supposed to be single digits for lows over the weekend! We are hoping to see fishable ice on the smaller lakes by the second week in dec.!

I'm goning to try it near Langdon ND this weekend. Theres a lake called Mt. Carmel that is usually the first lake with fishable ice. Its 10 miles from Canada.

There is a full skim (something like half an inch) over some ponds here in the Twin Cities already and Lake of the Isles is about half froze over with a similar skim. You can't walk on them yet, but its a lot farther along than last year at this time.

Does anybody use snow shoes or something like that to spread out the weight on early ice?

Ponds here in NW Iowa are all skimmed over pretty well. Going to warm up for 2 or 3 days, but then colder again by mid week. About 2 or 3 more nights in the teens and I think our small ponds would be fishable.

Good.

I am heading down to NW Iowa next week to help my sister who is getting her knee operated on. I think I will throw in the little sticks. I know a farm pond with bluegills and bass. There are a couple of crappie waters around there too. In that part of the state there is no big open water. There should be some decent ice. I expect that the hard should just about be walkable with the few more days they forecast.

By the time I get back I expect that Lake of the Isles will be almost ready and some of the smaller waters outside the metro should be very close or ready by then, too. Should be a much earlier winter for ice fishing than it was the last two.
