Well I have never ice fished for trout. I am going to try it this week end with a buddy we are fishing about a 40 acre lake that has only trout in it I need some advice on how to do it, what to use, how deep to fish? Max depth is 36 feet. I thank you very much for any advice you can tell me other then to just stay home:)

Thank you

Start on the bottom and work your way up about 5' at a time. Trout move a bunch and you will have bunch of bites and then they are gone. If you have a graph fish the depth you show fish. In clear water the fish will move a bunch up to hit a jig. Fish small tear drop jigs. Waxies, worms, meal worms and trout power bait work best. 4lb test helps. I like to use a spoon with a small dropper like you use for perch to cover water fast if I see something deep. Small jigging raps also work well. Trout will hit dead rod as well.

I fish trout in Wyoming and they are very active under the ice. We can't use live minnows but in lakes were you can use minnows trout nail em. I've caught big trout in lakes with perch on a dead rod with a minnow on a tip up.

Good luck

Scott pretty well covered it. Our strategy is to set a dead rod up shallow (quiet approach). Usually on top of the break in a hard bottom (sand/gravel) area. Then jig out in the deeper water from bottom to top. On a local lake we had good luck at times at the swimming area, because it was some of the only sand bottom in the lake. We usually have a shanty set up where we can sight fish along the drops. Lots of fun. Sometimes you'll be jigging away and like a streak one will come in and slam your lure. Quite often they'll cruise through above bottom & you have to reel up real fast to try & catch them. Lots of fun.
Good luck

Avoid trebles. If you have an orange or chartreuse gamagatsu beak hook number 4 or 6. Soft mouth use a firm, even hook set, but don't snap.

Fishing for lake trout? We use an old-fashioned airplane plug but its sleek, all metal design make it tougher and act differently than those airplane plugs. They should call this a Jet Plug because when you pull up on its unique, patented design, this lure screams out about 20 feet makes a circle and returns to center. You can't fish too close to you buddy and lakers big and small come snorting in to see what's going on down there! These plugs are made in Britt, Minnesota by a real Minnesotan, Roger Johansen! That's even slightly better than being built in the U.S.A. by an American!
