I was just looking at these, but know very little about Quantum reels. What are your opinions on the Hypercast - does the casting trigger thing work as advertised?
Thanks for your help.

Peanut,
I have one and ONE only! The trigger works as advertised but takes some getting used to, like a WHOLE day of fishing. Until you get on to it you'll drop alot of baits/lures into the boat or water. ;-) Once I got used to it, I liked it.
There is one problem though; the reel, as you may know, is instant anti-reverse i.e. on ALL the time. As a result, that reel is used for trolling or deadsticking anymore because I hate the anti-reverse! I never realized how much I back reel in the course of a days fishing and it DROVE ME CRAZY!!!!!!! If you have never tried an instant reel before I highly recommend borrowing one for a day before plopping money down to buy one!

Ranger, I know what you mean about back-reeling. I was concerned about that with my new Shimano Stradic, until I was shown the little switch that turns the anti-reverse off, allowing you you back-reel. I take it that the Quantum does not have this.
Thanks for the head's-up on the learning curve - the next reel I get is for my better half. She wants QuickFire (or its equivalent), but whatever she gets, she will NOT be happy spending a whole day to learn to use. Maybe we'd both be happier if she stuck with a Shimano.

Alot of my other reels are Shimano and I LOVE those babies!!
The Hypercast cannot turn the anti-reverse off, there is no switch.

Peanut,
I verticle jig the Detroit river alot when I'm not wire-lining and four of my jigging rods are set up with these reels. I love 'em. Instant anti-reverse is an advantage in this case. The drag system has not failed me to date they are not the heaviest thing out there either.
I became used to their operation in a very short time, a few casts or drops is all you will need, some people may have a different learning curve, but, I have had zero concerns or problems with these reels.
They are inexpensive and have held up thus far.
Good luck, :)

I purchased 2 of the original Hypercast reels -- just had to have the instant anti-reverse and it was/is great. Pretty good drag system.
In my use the reels have one main problem. With non-mono line, the cassting trigger pin will fray the line excessively in an hour worth of casting. No problem with mono, but Fireline and Spiderwire had the problem.
The weight of the reel is a little heavy too. I don't see it as a problem, but a couple fishing buddies didn't like it for this reason.
In the Hypercast II it looks like the pin material has been changed to a metal rather than the ceramic that was on on the original model. Sorry, I do not have any experience with the new models.

I call them "Wymper Casts".
Nothin' but trouble! Had 2 and threw em in the trash. Wasn't worth my time messin' with.

Decent reels with great drags bt i removed the "Hypercast" mechanism and firing pin from the two I have and they work great.
Nodoubt, the first few times you try them, you might drop your jig or lure behind you or slam it into the side of the boat.
They do work good for verical jigging and casting long distances.
General use reels with good durability and drag system in my opinion.
Hypercast may have been one of Quantums few mistakes but don't overlook Quantums other products.

I have had two Quantum reels (Not Hypercast). Both of them were faulty. I love Shimano and Diawa reels. Have multiples of each. My favorite reels are the Diawa 2500XIA reels, I have 2 of them.

Same for me. Two Quantums ... one for my wife and one for me (not Hypercasts). Both died within days of each other ... and I junked them. I am using Daiwa now for my baitcasters because I like the "flipping" feature for bottom bouncing. We use Shimano exclusively on our spinning rigs.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
Given that we use Fireline all the time, the wear issue is a concern. Nothing against the Quantum in general, but your experiences tell me the Hypercast will not be as well-suited as a
Shimano.
All the best,
derrek.
