Hi,

I searched with no luck on past posts regarding my problem. I just had the carb cleaned and new needles and diaphram put in professionally. Auger worked great on Sat but yesterday after the first two holes the auger never really go into the power band while drilling holes. What can be done to fix this? Weather got a little warmer which may affect it. Any other ideas for this problem?

Thank you,

Sounds like a throttle spring.

Not sure what model you have (or age?), but check the throttle linkage and make sure when you are giving it full throttle that it is actually holding the throttle wide open. Sometimes the linkage gets loose, and it does not pull it all the way open. Otherwise, the jet might need some fine adjustment.

Thanks guys for the replies...Jiffy 30 probably 10-12 years old. Looks brand new since I'm only able to get out and use it 3-4 per year. At lunch I checked the throttle linkage and it seemed to be going all the open. When I pull the throttle, it goes part way, pauses and then opens completely (in other words, not real smooth)

As for the jet, when looking at the screws, left is low (idle) and right is high, right???

THanks again...Labs

Left is the idle, right is the high speed mixture. They are normally both out 1/2-3/4 turn only. I think my idle is about 1/2 and the mix is about 5/8 turn. Doesn't hurt to just pop them out, blow out the holes, wipe the needles off and put 'em back in.

If the auger is spitting, has an erratic idle or is stalling you need to make carb adjustments. On older models you can fully adjust low idle and high idle. On newer models there are lock caps only allowing for a limited adjustment … EPA mandated.

Older Models
Disconnect Shaft First

On the side of the carb you will see two spring loaded screws. One will be marked L and the other H. This is for Low Idle and High Idle. Familiarize yourself with the location and get the correct screwdriver.

DO NOT TIGHTEN THESE SCREWS .. you will damage the needle seats.

Start with the idle. With the auger running gently turn the L screw in or out until the auger is idling smooth. Throttle the engine and check idle again. If all is good leave the L screw alone.
Now for the high idle you need to slightly raise the RPM and adjust the H screw until it’s smooth. When it feels smooth leave the screw alone and throttle the engine. If it idles good and revs good your done.
Re-install the shaft and recheck with shaft installed.

On newer models it’s basically the same as older models but you are limited on how much adjustment you can actually do.

Labs these are just some posts that I have copied from other forums. I hope they help ya.

Close both jets GENTLY

Open the Low speed 1/4 turn

Open High speed jet 1 1/4 turn

Start engine.

Adjust low speed until idling smoothly.

Open her up wide open.

Adjust High speed until engine transitions smoothly from idle to high speed without bogging.

Shut engine off. Let it cool.

Once engine is cold. Fire it up and let it idle for 30 secs. Open it up wide open again. Adjust if necassary.

The trick with the Jiffy's is to tune them during cold (ice fishing) weather.

Thank you for the replies...I actually gave this a try the other night and I think I might have it dailed in...just in time for the ice to melt...

Thanks again to everyone who help...
