Just picked up a use Cabelas Depthmaster Gold line counter reel with left hand retrieve from the bargin cave. I think I found out why the reel was returned. Every so often when you open the "bail" to let out line, the "eye" of the reel on the levelwind gets caught on the left end of he levelwind bar. Usually a couple hard pulls or a jiggle of the handle does the trick and the "eye'' starts back to the right, but I don't want to have to deal with that when fishing. Doesn't happen nearly as often when reeling in line, but moreso when feeding out line. I've taken the reel apart to try to fix, but can't get the levelwind bar disassembled. That's the only part of the reel at which I need to get a closer look and the only part I can't get apart. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll be fishing next week and really need to have this reel available.

Try cleaning out the level wind groves (spray cleaner made for reels is best) and pay close attention to the ends of the channel. Re-oil the level wind and check to see if the pawl screw at the bottom of the level wind assembly is tight. Check the screws on the side plate too while your at it, if they are loose this may cause the level wind to hang up at the end of it's travel.
If the pawl is worn or chipped it will need to be replaced. That is the do-hinky that runs in the grove. Not an expensive item to replace yet the shipping ups the cost.

why not contact cabelas and explain the situation. Just becasue its in the bargain cave doesnt mean it shouldnt work properly. I bet it was in the bargain cave because it was a left handed retrieve instead of the standard right hand retreive.

Cabelas already told me because I bought it in the bargain cave in the store that I'm on my own.

Yup...Buyer be ware in the Bargain Cave as that is the policy in the Bargain Cave. However, if you bring everything back in person sometimes they will surprise you and take it back. It's easy to stay on policy on the phone but easier to take it back in person.
I purchased a cantilever scope mout from the "cave". After about 3 boxes of shells I still coild not get sighted in. Turns out the scope mout was bent and even a gun smith could not fix it. They took it back and gave me my funds back. I was told the no return policy over the phone but showed u in person and they did not ask any questions and appologzed for me having to spend $$ on shells to figureout the problem.

:horsepoop:, i didnt know that...thats a terrible policy and IMO a terrible way to do business. Id bet theyve lost customers over that throughout the years....Too bad.:(
Thats just another reason to support your Ma and Pop shops...more personal and want to make it right no matter what it takes.:phatyo:

Why is that a terrible policy? It says on every one of their products in the Bargain Cave that it is a "Buy As Is, No Return" item. It also usually states why it was returned. Why you think they are selling things at a 50% or more discount? I have found a lot of fantastic bargains in the Bargain Cave at Cabela's. You just need to look over the item really good before the purchase. I do agree that they are more likely to take the item back in person at the store then if you are on the phone. It's a joke that anyone would say something bad about Cabela's return policy. There isn't a company that I can think of that has a better return policy than Cabela's

I have to agree with Cabela's return policy being second to none. A few years back I bought a pair of "silent weave" hunting bibs that were made for bow hunting. I took them to the U.P. for a trial run and below 32 degrees I sounded like a bag of chips in the tree! I still filled a couple of tags, got blood on the bibs, and they still took them back........no questions asked!
When it come the the Bargain Cave it clearly states everywhere that all items are sold as is and there is no return's. I have had some buddies be able to return things there but they went directly to the store.

I think its a terrible policy because it entitles them to sell something that doesnt work and get away with it?..If it doesnt work properly, then it should not be up for sale. What if i buy it online, can i really look it over? Not really.
In addition, not all of the things in the bargain cave are used, some are brand new discontinued items or items that dont sell well...I.E. a left handed line counter reel....Thats all im saying.
Ive had to return things to Cabelas before, and it was a non issue, their service was fine. But, in this aspect, i dont agree with it....tell me i dont make some valid points here.

is it the same policy when buying online through their "bargain cave"? I'm a bit unsure as many if not most all items in there are new items, just basically "on sale" aka closeouts and stuff like that.
Backwater Eddy is right on as to what the likely problem is. Either the worm gear is damaged or the pawl is worn or if you are lucky the cap that holds the pawl in place is loose. It's remotely possible that the small gear in the side of the reel that drives the worm gear has a tooth stripped off or the like but if it's always at one side is most likely the pawl or gear.
The thing I don't know is who makes Cabelas reels? Where can you get parts?
Good luck.

I guess I don't see any of your points as very valid. It's not like they are trying to hide the fact that whne you buy things in the Bargain Cave that they are "Buy As Is". Also, you are not forced to shop for things out of the Bargain Cave. If you want the option to return a product then just buy everything out of the regular store at regular price. I, for one, like the opportunity to find things at a steep discount. Like I said, check the product over really good before you buy it.

I suspect it would be a Diawa frame, and parts? Not 100% on that, but fairly certain. Parts list and service info should be in the box, or printed on the lid of the box.

I think someone told me Okuma makes those reels. Anyway, it was diagnosed as a knick in one o the grooves on the worm gear. They gave me the name of a repair shop in IA and I called them. Sorry, I forget the name. The man with whom I spoke was very nice and helpful and said I need a new worm gear and pal. It cost me all of about $8 delivered - problem solved.

Back to the issue of the reel......................
I have 11 or 12 Penn reels of various models/sizes and have had the same problem several times. In each case, it has been caused by a worn or defective pawl. As Backwater Eddy said, that's a small (but critical) item, it's cheap, and it's easy to remedy. After cleaning and oiling the gear, if the problem isn't gone I'd get a new pawl and pop it in. For my many Penn's, I buy pawls and other parts on eBay. They're easy to find and cheap. Good luck.

Oooops! Didn't see your post about solving the problem before I posted. Glad it's resolved.

Now hold on just a sec...... It is a biggie. You're kidding, right? No, really, you're kidding, right? :cookoo:
No one put a gun to anyone's head to make them buy an item out of the bargain cave!!!! If someone is concerned about a product not working properly, walk to the reel bar and buy a new one. It really is that simple.
People like you, wrongly taking advantage of a liberal return policy, are one of the reasons that prices keep going up. I'll wager that you just might be the same person that buys something from Cabela's for "the Big Fishing Trip," uses it for the trip, and then returns it when they get back. Am I that far off?
Simply put, no, you don't make any valid points.

I work there and see it every day. Sorry, maybe I came down a little hard on him, sometimes a person just needs to vent. But day after day, people try to get something for nothing.
I like to think that Cabela's is a great place to get the things that you need, at a reasonable price, while dealing with great people. Why is that not enough, why is that such a difficult concept for some people to grasp? If enough people unfairly take advantage of them, then they will not be there for the ones that don't.
Nuff said.
