Does anyone have any experience with this engine? My son is thinking of buying a used ranger with this outboard and it has low miles. Any maintenance issues would be appreciated. Thanks

I would stay away from those engines and have never heard anything good about them. They are like the old opti maxs'. Not very dependable. BUT this is all hear say. I hav never owned or fished from a boat with a ficth.

I have had an 2000 ficht 175 and I not only trust that engine but would buy it again in a minute. Only problem I had was issue with lower unit caused by a missing thrust washer right from the factory.Always takes me out and back just fine. I have put about 400 hrs on this motor without a hiccup from the engine itself. I will admit that the newer Rudes are a little more refined but short of it not being a 4 stroke I can't think of any real problems. BRP has been great with product support and information. The engine is powerful and dependable and not too loud for a 2 stroke. The motor got a bad rep from 95-97 when it was first introduced but they changed the location of the oil injectors and the problem went away. An 02 would be a safe bet in my book!

I have a 2000 150 Ficht. I have the fully updated version of the motor with the pinned heads. Runs great.
While I am no expert on the 2002 models, I'm fairly certain that all the bugs were worked out by then. In maybe mid to late 2000, they redesigned the Ficht to include the 'RAM' in the title and I think the bugs were all worked out. The pinned heads helped with the carbon build up problem if I remember right.

I had a 1998 Ficht 150. After getting the powerhead replaced under warranty in 1999, I put 1200 hours on it in fresh and saltwater without any problems. I currently have a 2003 Ficht 200hp that has performed flawlessly in the last 5 years. I fish approx. 200 days per year in fresh and saltwater. This is a very solid engine since 2000.

I have a 175 2002 FICHT and it has been a great motor. No problems so far and runs very well. I bought it new. You should also post on the hulltruth.com. The saltwater boys love the FICHTS. I agree with the other posts. The early years had problems but when Bom took the helm they made a good motor a great motor. I would buy another as well.

A 2002 Evinrude FICHT is a good engine as that is when Bombardier started producing them after OMC went belly-up.
As with any used piece of machinery, have a qualified tech check it out completely and give you a copy of the computer's engine history. An authorized dealer can also look up the serial number and see what warranty history the motor has.

I have a 2003 175 - absolutely no problems with this motor. Anyone who states that 2002-present Evinrudes are problem motors is misinformed.:stick:

What about a pair of 2001 225 fichts? I am interested in buying a boat that is for sale with a pair of these motors. I hear horror stories!

Everything you read above applies to the 2001 also. Great engines. Just have them inspected by a good mechanic. Get the readouts.

i have 2001 ficht motor runs great. thay had problems in the 90s. but fixet them. thay are good motors. when you here stay away from all ficht motors.thats bull only mid 90s.
Had an 03' 135Ficht and an 02' 200Ficht without a single problem!! Both brothers are running 225HO's, 04' and 05' without a single problem. I would not be afraid of the 02' at all!!! Like Seahorse said, that is the bombardier version, not the OMC!!

I had a 2003 250, I had two fuel pumps go and a throttle position control sensor go within 1 season 1500.00 later, a pro had it before me, he wiped out the lower on it but Rude put a new powerhead on it with the lower (don't know why though) I traded the boat in The next owner blew the powerhead....twice... the motor is parts now replaced with a 250 pro xs.
My buddy put a 01 or 02 200 on his Lund as a repower moving up from a 115 on his 1950 Tyee, ran it for a year, blew it up at 160 hours.
No stories here just facts.
I run a 2002 620 with the 225 HO Ficht with about 250 hrs on it. Been a great motor. I have replaced the lower unit, but my fault, rock on Rainy Lake. Very powerful, quiet, and efficient. I love it.
Most motor companies have had issues with some motor here or there. And it is those issues that everyone hears about. Most people don't post (unfortunately) about the good experiences. You'll hear buy only this brand, run from that one (Ford vs Chevy thing). Have the motor checked out, trust your instincts, and go wet a line.
