It will be won the same place the last two MWC tournaments have been one, doing the same thing.

Jason, I think he was looking for a serious response.

BAW
03-01-2002, 01:13 PM
What would that be?

JasonMN

Bob,

Ringworms was my serious response. I also consider James Holst (a local guide) to be a favorite to win it. That is just my opinion...whether or not this is correct is a whole different story!

In the pool #4 reports on www.fishtheriver.com ringworms (specific type of plastic bait) tossed up on shallow rocks always seem to be taking the big fish. Although, I took a trip with James last fall and a hairjig fished in some nasty timber took the biggest fish of the day(6+ lbs).

Sorry my 1st post was so vague, hopefully this explains my response a little better.

Is Lake Peppin in pool 4?

winning pattern will be plaid! it will take a little bit of everything in the box to produce winning fish every day. the great thing about the rcl tournament format is you have to produce for four days to win!

bob

I know what ringworms are, they are the bait Larry Erickson dominated the NAWA event in La Crosse, long before fishtheriver even existed, though they seem to want to take credit for the technique.

Holst the favorite?? Did you forget about Steve Delain and John Renschen(current MWC Team of the Year)? Do the names Bob Bodin, Scott Mann(previous Team of the Year on the MWC) ring a bell? Let's not forget about Scott Allar(MWC Big Stone winner). How about either Scott Strangstalien or Steve Tauscher (second place finshers in the MWC championship held on the same body of water in 2000). I would be willing to put my money on any of these locals before I would bet on Holst. And Jason, I am impartial, not trying to plug for anyone's business (web site/guide service) can you honestly say the same?

Guest user "bob", I'll take you up on that! How much are you willing to bet. I'll go up to $1000 on Holst against any of your guys. Contact me at badfnger@mninter.net We will find a third party to hold the cash until game day. I'm serious!

I'll need to cover my expenses for that week, this looks like and easy bet for me.....

BAW,

Many, many, many fish will be caught on cranks behind boards in the lake (yes, Lake Pepin is part of Pool 4 - Red Wing) There will be other paterns that produce, inclding shallow shoreline, wing dams, deep holes, main channel in the river, backwaters...... There is a lot of water.

Plan to spend a week pre-fishing....at least!

Yes. I can honestly say the same. I have no interest in promoting anyones guide service. I have taken one trip with James and he would probably have no clue who I even am. I don't remember FTR.com ever laying claim to inventing the ringworm. I have no real interest in promoting FTR either, other than to say I think they do a great job and I am frequent visitor. That is it. Really.

As I mentioned earlier I am simply stating my opinions. Apparantly your's are different. That's nice. I'll stick with mine and you can keep your's.

Oh, and I am a gamblin man....:)

you beat me to it Badfinger. I took too long composing my post (15). alt-tab alt-tab alt-tab at work as people walk up..think twice and delete nasty comments ;) Glad someone else feels the same tho!

BTW - sorry to the original poster BAW for taking your thread in the wrong direction.

Hey Bob,
Before making false acquisations that Mr. Holst claims to have come up with the ring-worm pattern you should read the article, "Ringworming the RIver" in this article he says explicitly that he is not "taking credit" for figuring out the system.

Please don't make these statements about people or different sites if you don't have all of your facts.

Pitts

WHAT!! Handliners don't use a hook and line???
I think a rod is a definate advantage to landing fish.
Don't knock it till ya try it.

Willowcats? What

Brent

Well said Bob, I guess you picked the top guns to beat but don't forget about Nick Johnson and curt P.. Holst would be the last one on my list to bet on since you can' t have 4 people fishing in the boat. It's my opinion that Holst is very over rated, if you want a guide you better get ahold of Willard!!!!

JasonMN

I am guessing Bob=Brent and vise versa. I wish we could still see the IP addresses!

Handlining is a spring pattern dude. Thats when the
MWC Championship was held too. The RCL will be in the
fall and I seriously doubt handlining will be any kind of factor!

Gonz.

Bob does not equal Brent!! However you look at the big picture, some of the best fishermen in the country live in a 15 mile stretch on pool 4. Just ask yourself this question, "How many fishing tournaments have been won south of Lake City?" Whether the major tournaments or local tournaments, I know the answer because I fish most of these tournaments. Every person that Bob and Brent have listed have just as good chance of winning that tournament as Holst, and that is not putting him down one bit. Just remember how many tournaments are one south of Lake City.

Lead Man

PS: Brent, are you that guy I was talking to about three-waying at the Port of Call Friday night?????

bob
03-04-2002, 10:54 AM
No Brent does not equal bob. While we are at it let's add Eric Olson and Jason P. Did they not win the MWC Championship out of the same casino?

bob
03-04-2002, 11:07 AM
I guess I can say the same to you, I was not aware of a ring worm article that Holst wrote.

rd

didn't say the championships, just the last two MWC tournaments.

BAW

What is the main baitfish in the lake?

bob
03-04-2002, 01:05 PM
shad shad and more shad. There is also white bass and sheepshead that at times provide a meal for an eye. Pepin is at the extreme northern limit for the shad in the lake, therefore there is a huge die off most winters but a few do survive to reproduce. This will cause the resources needed to substain the shad population to be used by the YOY. Because of this there is a huge amount of shad in that perfect size for the walleye in this lake. The cycle is repeated every year. This year might be a little different because of the mild weather but fishing below the dams and ice fishing the last couple of weeks I have seen dying and dead shad by the hundreds.

I have to say I almost fell out of my chair when I read through the posts here. I know James on a very limited basis, but I'm sure he would be the first to say these guys are great fisherman. As a matter of fact, I don't doubt that he has respect for these guys. Anyway, I'm sure the personal attacks on James would also bring a smile to his face, so I too started to laugh at you guys.

I'll give FTR credit, they don't have the catty, childish outbursts that are very common on this site. 99% of the info here is great, but the 1% BS or personal attacks always seems to reer it's ugly head in more posts than it should.

I don't care if it's been a long winter.....It's no excuse.

As far as the original question is concerned. I would be willing to bet that jigging is going to do very well during the championship. I don't remember the dates off the top of my head... Jigging the shallows during low light periods with hair and ringworms will be productive. Just like most river systems though I would expect the fish to move constantly depending on the flowage rates. It's going to be a fun tourney to watch.
