Hey all, this past weekend my 2007 115 optimax would not get above 2300 rpms. It worked fine running it from the ramp to the dock at the cabin, but when I left to go fishing later that day, 2300 rpms was all I could get. I have the smartcraft gage, and there was was no alarm or fault code. After pulling the boat and doing some trouble shooting it's aparent I'm getting no spark in the bottom cylinder. changed all three plugs, and got the same deal. I think I have a bad discharge capasitor for that cylinder. Is that that the right term or am I wrong. Any other ideas on what it might be. I'm getting no arc there at all. Also should my smartcraft gage have done something to warn me? Also, can someone let me know if this would be covered by my three year warranty? I'm assuming so. Thanks in advance.

I have a 06 115 opti that had a similar problem this spring. Couldn't get over 3000 rpm's and idled rough. Sometimes it would die at a idle. It was a bad coil. I have a 5 year warranty and this is the 3rd season on the motor. They covered it 100%.

Thanx Jon. Do you have any idea of what that repair cost?

No, mine was covered under warranty. If you have a 3 year warranty, you should be covered.
I am sure if you had no warranty, there would be a diagnostic fee plus the parts and labor to fix it.

Had the same thing happen this spring on my 07 115 opti. It was a CDI. A marina that I stopped at for emergency service just pulled one off of a 40hp 4 stroke, guess the part # is the same. Didn't cost a dime.

Forgot, what does CDI stand for?

CDI = Capacitive Discharge Ignition

Jon, this is different than the coil, correct?

Not sure what part he is referring to when he says CDI. I could see the coil being the same for a 40 hp and a 115hp but if there is a ignition module of some sort, I wouldn't think it is the same part due to the number of cylinders. I am thinking he might referring to a coil.
My opti is all new to me as my last motor was a 1987. I know GMC trucks much better.

Ok it may have not been a CDI, I am over my head in mechanics lingo. However they did take a part off a 40hp 4str. It probably was a coil, whatever it was there are 3 of them on the engine; one for each spark plug/cylinder.

Yep, it's a coil. They must have got a bad batch of them.

my motor did the same thing, your in guardian mode. most likely you have a bad coil. I had two,one can take out another.

bassman, should my smartcraft gage have alarmed for this? It didn't.

NO.my smartcraft did not show any problem at first. After a little while of running it showed overheat and then check engine. Also MAT fault showed up,which turned out to be a sensor.
