I've finally got my boat dialed in (problems originally posted under a different name before the board switch). Alumacraft nav 165 CS w/90 hp and 5hp Honda four strokes. Boat was a little sluggish before adding the kicker. After the kicker shifted it back heavy it developed a porpoising issue. Motor was mounted on the transom and turning a 17" aluminum Solas prop. I moved the motor up a hole and tried a 16" Turbo Stainless prop.
Basically, I've got my boat back and more. Boat flies up out of the hole. I attribute this to the vented prop as I tested the prop before the motor lift. After the lift, the porpoising issue essentially gone, and I gained 4 MPH. WOT performance (light load) is 6000 (maybe 6050)RPMs and 38 mph. When trimming down, I can actually feel when I hit the point where the AV plate starts diving under the water and the whole boat goes heavy. Above that point, it is a different boat and everything I dreamed I'd get from it.
The only remaining issue is that now If I try, I can ventilate the prop in a turn (which I fully expected with the lift). When turning left, I can feel the prop ventilating ever so slightly, but it holds perfectly fine. But, when turning right, I can start to blow it out if I want to.
My question is, why does it only ventilate badly when turning right? does it have something to do with the weight of the kicker on the left side of the transom, could it be from the large transducer and spray shield that is on the transom to the right of the motor, could it be from the trim tab adjustment I had to make after raising the motor, or is it just the nature of that prop/motor combination and torque?
I usually never run WOT anyways, if so, it's only in a straight away.
Is there something else I should attempt to tweak, should I attempt to try a different prop, or should I just pay attention, be aware of it, and enjoy my new found boat as it is?
Thanks for all your help so far.
