: trailering with kicker motor
temang 08-02-2008, 03:06 PM Just installed a 9.9 pro-kicker on a 08 ranger 620. When trailering is it recommended to have a tie-down to the trailer or is it ok with the trim lock with the motor in the up position.
The centering straps seem to hold it in place nicely also
Thanks Craig
ffishman 08-02-2008, 04:36 PM I've got a T8 on mine, and I trailer with it in the down position. Never had a problem.

I do the same on my T8, down position. No problem.
cliftp 08-02-2008, 07:36 PM I have the T8 also, just run it down and go. Its what my dealer told me to do.

Temang ... I talked with 3 dealers about this very issue and all 3 told me "just trailer it with the engine vertical". I agree ... not much ground clearance and I am always afraid of dragging that skeg.
So, I also looked into making a transome saver or modifying one to fit. One thing I ran into while considering modifying one is that the vee of the transom savers on the market are so wide that they didn't fit the T-8 well.
How did you build yours? What were the measurements? How did you attach the transom saver to the trailer frame (my frame is slanted downward where I need to attach my transom saver and became part of the issue of modifying one to fit)? Can you give us a couple of pictures please?
temang 08-13-2008, 09:29 AM sorry i was gone for a bit- tourney season in full swing
i took a piece of square tubing and that fit inside a old transom mount and cut the end off square- just grabbed a piece of steel and bent it to match the square tubing so it could slide in and drilled and put a trailer pin when i am trailering- i mounted that to the rear frame of the trailer so it is level then just cut the tubing off so it was level with the big motor when in place
the motor end just needed a small rag to pick up the small play when i put the motor into the mount and it protects the paint on the motor as well

Bill Krejca 08-13-2008, 11:46 AM I have a T8 on my Alaskan. I don't like the idea of towing the motor vertically due to potential skeg damage if I have a flat tire, etc. I sort of compromise and tilt the motor to the first click(it is a non-electric model) and then bungee cord the lower unit to the trailer. This keeps the motor from kicking up when going over a bump, and I feel provides some degree of protection.

These folks may have what you are looking for. I use their centering clips on my 150 with hydraulic steerkng. They have a unit to put on the tilt cylinder of your Pro Kicker. http://www.m-ywedge.com/
lund115 08-14-2008, 02:59 PM I use a transomsaver on mine as well. To close to the pavement for a flat tire, or if a coon goes between the wheels and hits it.
One of the main reasons I like it, is if you are in a hurry to get into the water.(we are all some times) Your motor is not in the down postion and you wreck the kicker when the boat comes off the trailor.
Modog 08-14-2008, 03:45 PM I used a piece of 1" thick plastic. (1" T x 2" W x 3" L) I drilled a 1/2" hole through it the long way. Then used a router to open up the hole and create a 3" long slot that snaps onto the tilt shaft on my 9.9 ProKicker. Works great.
Reels 08-14-2008, 08:46 PM I'll toss in my two cents. I have had my 9.9 down for 10 years and it has never hit anything. This includes pulling out of burger king and driving over conrete curbs to get out because the turn was too tight. Been all over the country and Canada without a problem what so ever.
sparkyaber 08-16-2008, 07:59 AM Reels, I also have a kicker and have never hit anything. But, I suppose that different boats have different transom heights, sit differentlly on their respected trailers, motors with different shaft lengths. I have a ton of space between my skeg and the ground, in fact, I think it sits above the trailer bunks.
