I seem to get hair brained ideas, particularly late at night. My question is, do any of you use saltwater lures on a regular basis? There are a number of manufacturers that make saltwater lures (like Rapala in shad raps, husky jerks ect.) yet offer different color variations that are intriguing. Is it worth trying out?

goldpig,

I use freshwater lures in the salt with good success so I can't see any reason why you couldn't give some of the saltwater versions a try. Of course you'd have to keep an eye on the size of the things, the ones designed for the salt tend to get a bit large in some versions. If you troll at all I might want to suggest one to you that I suspect would be a killer for you all, it certainly is for us. There's a fellow (previously a Captain off of one of the Off Shore boats out of Hatteras) named David Reed who has a home business, out of Frisco, just south of Buxton, North Carolina (the town where the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands) making off shore lures. He makes several models and they are the catchingest lures I have ever used. In particular he makes a model called the Sea Wasp ( https://xfishmojo.merchantquest.net/eyecatcherlures/s-mart/seawasp.htm ) that I suspect would be particularly suitable to your fishing. These things are 1/8th oz. lead heads with reverse tied thin strip mylar in one of four color combinations. They run about $4 each. He also makes a small lure called the Zinger ( https://xfishmojo.merchantquest.net/eyecatcherlures/s-mart/zingers.htm ), which is about a buck cheaper, and comes in at 1/10th oz and can be had in a reverse tie as well.

Give David a call at (252) 995-7744 or take a look at his stuff at his website at http://www.eyecatcherlures.com/ I've been using his lures for about 5 years now and they are the first thing to come out of the box in the morning for me.
