Have read many posts on cleaning, storage, and cooking of various types of fish. Is there any one side dish that is a must-have for that "perfect" fish-fry or fish meal?...Maybe taters, coleslaw,hush-puppies?
For me,it's bread and butter. Fresh baked is best, but store-bought will do in a pinch. "Can't eat fish without bread and butter," is what my Mom always said. I still can't.
Am interested in what others like or prefer,...or share a recipe.

Thanks!
Old Joe

Home made brown bread or cornbread, fried potatoes and onions, or maybe a scoop of some slaw.

STEAK! I don't care much for fish. I will eat it only as a last resort if there is nothing else to choose from. Just my preference so please don't waste your typing skills dumping on me. I release everything my partners don't insist they want to bring home. (This is why fish love me.)

Hey Supretroller...

You're welcome in my boat anytime...specially when the Walleye (Northern, Crappie, Catfish..etc.) bite is "on"...

However, I had a fishing partner just like you and ultimately I did get rid of him...got worried about "this unnatural...don't eat fish behavior" and figured he might just snap the rest of the way and commence to be a cannibal or something...

With a non-breaded walleye recipe that is baked, I have been getting into a good twice baked potato for the side.

With the breaded deep fried fish, I like coleslaw.

There's only ONE "side dish" that is a "must have" with fish...and thats an ice cold brewski!!!!!

SuperTroller,

I can handle the steak as long as its venison. My wife and I always differ on fish, she likes to eat fish from a restaraunt and I like to eat what I catch.

As long as you got some homemade bread and a nice cold brew to go with it your all set.

I'm not real picky about where the steaks come from. I just want a chunk of meat in front of me and an ice cold beer next to the plate. These are life's simple pleasures for me.

An outstanding side dish for walleye is a bean - mushroom soup casserole that is topped with a can of dried, fried onions!

If we're making our walleye as tempura, we like to cook tempura vegetables (mushrooms, sweet potato, green chile, and squash) to accompany it. It's a good thing they haven't heard about this in Japan or we'd be losing a lot of WE to the Orient.

When the fryer comes out, so do the jalepeno poppers with a brewskie. Use the poppers to get the oil temperature just right, then eat them while doing fish.

Usually I prefer to bake the walleye filets or make them in the microwave.

Yes, you may think it sounds bad but they taste great. Saute the filets with butter in a microwave safe caserole dish so that the entire bottom of the dish is completely covered with filets and butter, then on high for 7-8 minutes. Try it, you might just like it. Quick easy and very little clean up.
