I would like to get some feedback from 2003-2008 Yamaha 250 HP motor owners. Are they really as poor performance as some say? How is reliability? It would be on a Ranger 620 or 621. Feedback appreciated but PLEASE no bashing but all info wanted both good and bad.
thanks.

06 F-250 on a 07 620. Love my motor, other than spinning a hub in the prop this am..................No probs mechanically, quiet, fuel comsumption is'nt to bad. I run a Pro Series 21 prop, full tourney load I get 53-55 GPS. I'm not propped for speed, with VMAX 23 I can hit 60.

Are you asking about the four stroke or the two?

I have an 08 F250 on an 08 620, it's a little slow out of the hole, but other than that I'm very happy with it. It might not win any races but I'm not out there to race anyone. I went with Yamaha for there reliability. Good luck Mark N

Might want to take note that the posts here are for the 620 not the 621. as well as the top speeds and hole shot comments.
Both the E-tec and the Merc 225 engines will push the boat (620) @ 57 to 60 and plane the boat, full load, 2 people livewell and gear. The 250 Yam will either barely get on plane and max full load at (most all are at 53-55) with a 21 pitch or not plane out until 1 or 2 get on the bow and the get 58 or so with a 23 pitch.
Remember I said a 225 (E-tec, Opti) vs 250 Yam. the 621 max speed is 52 on the 621 (barely makes it on plane with 1 guy on the bow) and 57+ with the other 2 (all w/ full load).
Talk to the dealers, other anglers, and take a test ride and you'll see what I'm talking about. I don't want to see another unhappy angler.
The boats are awesome, power it with the RIGHT power.
Note this is not a bash, this is true numbers and results of over 3 yrs of analysis, discussion w/ dealers, anglers and tournament fishermen.

I have an o5 621 witht the yamaha 4 stroke and could not be happier. In fact I would buy another one when it comes necessary. I get 52 MPH at 5200 Rpm. I am not sure what you call slow out of the hole, I can be on plane in about 6-10 seconds by myself. If the live well is full (adds about 400 lbs) it will take longer. The engine has never failed to start. I am not sure about gas mileage but I would say about 4 MPG is about average.

You forgot to mention the one thing the F225/F250 don't do that the opti and e-tec's do.
The yamies DON"T BLOW UP!!!

First off the Yamaha blades suck on these boats, an M21 Yammy prop doesn't have the diameter to lift or hold a heavy boat like the 621.
I've run a F250, on a 21' glass boat, I felt it was little doggy out of the hole, but midrange and top end where as good as my 250HPDI. Actually top end was better, once it got wound up it was makin' horsepower.
The above statement is so dependent on set up and who is doing the setup, I could make either of those motors perform like crap to get a skewed test result.
The Yamaha's F250 has a larger gearbox than the the Rude and the Merc, and that gives those two a couple of mph advantage, but to say they are out right dogs in comparison is not a correct statement.
For what it's worth the 621's seem to prefer a 4 blade prop as does my ZX2050 Skeeter.
