I'm having aproblem with my '98 evinrude 90 hp ficht (it's on an 18 ft. sylvan v-hull). Just wanted to know if anyone else has run into this problem before.
The motor starts, accelerates, and runs fine. When the motor is turned off it starts up again fine. When I accelerate, it stalls. I immediately start it up again without difficulty and it runs well, but any attempt to accelerate results in immediate stalling. This is consistent and only occurs after shutting the motor off or shifting into neutral. After initial start up I can throttle up and run it without any problem (no miss-firing, hesitation, etc.). I had the feul-water separator filter changed but that didn't help. Took it to a large shop where diagnostic computer indicated fouled plug. All 4 plugs changed but the problem still exists. Again, the thing starts without difficulty and runs fine even after stalling; I just can't accelerate. Anybody have any suggestions of what to check next? (feul is new, oil is not. Ran fine for the 1st 12 hrs I owned it- just bought it 4/08). Thanks.

On a FICHT the rpm is controlled by the throttle position sensor. If it is out of adjustment when the motor starts, it will not accelerate. IF there is a lot of time on the motor, the injectors may not be flowing properly, usually lean, and that could allow the motor to stall.

One way to check the injectors or a single injector is to have the dealer hook up the laptop and manually richen either all the injectors at once or individually. If the motor starts idleing better as they richen, then they could be part of the problem.

Also make sure compression is good and that the thermostats are warming up the motor enough.
