I currently have 1999 3.1 liter 225HP Yamaha V-Max. It is on a 1999 YAR-Craft storm. I was considering getting a newer, Not New just newer motor of same HP that gets better Fuel Econemy and could push me over the 60mph mark. I can get 57mph GPS out of the yamaha. I am planning on fishing as many tournaments as possible next year so i need one that would be able to get me on and off the water day in and day out.

I would also like to know if anyone knows of a good place that would do tradins or someone that has used outboards. thanks for any and all help..

Kid...A few things on your thread...I think you have an extremely reliable motor at this point already. Perhaps one of the most reliable that Yamaha has ever made, given you maintain it properly. 2nd. None of the new motors will use much less if any less fuel at wide open throttle. There wil be some advantage at lower speeds, but it sounds like you are less concerned about that..... Also, You have a great tournament boat in that Storm.

For the large amount of money it will cost you to trade up, you can put a lot of gas in that boat!! Plus, being an older boat with a new motor, you will definitely not get your money back when you trade boats.

All that put aside, if you want the performance, you will have to go 2 stroke. The Evinrude 225HO etec or Merc 225 proXS will give you that and be better on gas than your current motor. They are both pushing closer to 250HP, but it will cost you though!!!

Hi KidWalleye,

I use to run the same motor on my 03 Ranger 619, and I did it for the reason that Ryno said, it was a very proven, reliable, and fast motor. A couple of things that I did not like about this motor is that it would smoke pretty bad at start-up and the fuel/oil consumption was not good...no matter the speed. Currently, I have been running the Evinrude Etec 225 HO on a Triton 215X. This motor has been great! The fuel/oil consumption is far better than the Yamaha that I use to run. it has been very reliable, quiet, does not smoke at start-up, extremely great hole shot, and excellent top speed. Good luck on your motor research!

I gotta agree with BW, with new outboards going for around $100/HP, you can probably buy several years worth of fuel for what it would cost you to do the switch.

In terms of reliability and performance, you'll probably gain a little, but again, I'm not sure you'll gain enough to make it worth your while.

I will be selling my 2009 200 HO ETEC after this season.
I am a Prostaff member and will let the motor go for a reasonable price.
It pushes my 23' Proline at 54 mph
