: 2007 Lund Explorer SS Preformance
Robert Kidd 08-19-2008, 06:57 PM I am doing some checking for my buddy. He has a 2007 Lund Explorer SS with a 60 horse 4 stroke and a 9.9 pro kicker. 24 volt electric (2 Batteries) Motor is mounted in the 3rd hole and has a 13 inch prop. He is pulling 6000rpm wide open but can't get up on plane with more than one person in the boat and does not get on plane very good with one person. Any help would grestly appreciated.

your friend has what we call a badly under-powered boat. I have a similiar 2006 1700 Explorer tiller, and I tried the 60hp 4S for a year, and replaced it with a 75 Optimax. Your buddys boat, being a side console, is rated up to a 125hp motor. If he really wants to enjoy his boat for years to come, he should bite the bullet and get a 115hp motor on it. Or, get a 2nd 60 (LOL).
Sorry.

I assumed that the poster was talking about a 1700, due to the 24V 2-batteries reference. I don't think the 1600 has room for 2 in the in-floor battery box.
stinkycat 08-20-2008, 04:44 AM I have a 08 1725 Pro Guide, which I believe is the same hull as the 1700 Explorer, and with 3-4 guys, bmtm, 3 batteries and all the rest of the gear, I can get up on plane no problem but it takes a little bit of water and my top end is about 34 gps. I have a 75 Yamaha 4S. Since my boat is a tiller it is rated for a 75 hs top end. I would of like to have had a 90 put on it but the dealer would not go for that.
Like HRG said a 115 should push that boat right along but if your buddy is going to replace his 60, max it Out! IMHO
It's unfortunate your buddy choose to buy an underpowered boat. But why does he also need a 9.9 kicker? The 60 should troll very slow with the 13 pitch prop and the trolling motor can cover the slower trolling ranges. Removing the kicker may help a little. Dropping the motor one hole may also help. But the bottom line is he has a big boat trying to be pushed by way too small of motor. A 75 in the tiller configuration is about as small as you want to go. But if he chooses to repower, bite the bullet and go with a 115.
guest 08-20-2008, 08:51 AM Hey Bob,
Is the boat a 1600 ss? If so I think max motor is 90hp. May be a combo of problems. He probably has the weight of a 90hp on the back with the power of a 60hp. If it was me, I would lose the kicker with the 60hp or up grade to a 90hp and keep the kicker if the weight on the transom isn't too much.

1600SS is rated for 90HP if console and 60HP if Tiller....well, at least mine is. I have ride on a 60HP on a 1600 Tiller and its not as bad as when you mentioned. If its 1600, there is something not right here.
Mark Klossner 08-21-2008, 07:10 AM I agree with the previous posters -- that is a lot of weight and boat for a 60-horse. I'm sure there's more weight in the boat than what you have listed as well -- like fuel, livewells, etc?
Unlogged NC 08-21-2008, 04:16 PM I have a 1675 Explorer Tiller (90'Beam) w/ a 60 HP 4-stroke and w/ 2 it is good, 3 it is a slow. My problem was maxing out to 75HP added over 100lbs on the Merc at the time and I didn't think it was worth it plus the 60HP was Fuel Injected instead of Carbs. In hindsight I'm sure the 75HP would perform much better, but the 60HP is certainly usable.
I always heard 80% of max is the min to go.
Good luck,
NC

I had a chance to get on the water with my buddy yesterday. Some of the problems is operator but I think there is also some preformance issues. As mentioned above except it is a 2006 model. It is a typical fishing boat loaded for bear. The boat is very slow coming out of the hole but would get on plane (but takes way to long) At 5800 to 6000rpm the boat would run around 30/32 mph. Which I think is all you can expect from this unit and with the rpm I think the prop is doing its job. When you try to trim any higher it blows out the prop. Now when you fill the front live well it would not get on plane only run about 10/15 mph and really plow the water. I am no small man (LOL) even putting my big _SS on the front deck I couldn't get it to come down????????? Empty the well and gould get it down again but to long. Check to make sure the hull was dry and not carrying extra water and it was dry. Now Here is my thought with the motor being mounted in the third hole from the top the motor is not setting all the way on the transon and you loose a lot of your trim ability. Going to take it to the dealer Tuesday and let him look at it. Now what do you fellows think?

Hot Runr Guy 08-27-2008, 11:46 AM hate to ask again, but which length model are we talking about here? Also, do you know if the 60 has the standard or the BigFoot gearcase? My guess is that it has the standard, which is a fairly small unit, and being mounted in the 3rd hole is probably too high to get much leverage, coupled with the smaller, 10-1/2" or so diameter prop the standard gearcase uses.

Bob I have the 2002 Explorer 16ss With Console . Nearly 17 feet long. I have a Merc 60hp two stroke and it is on plane in milli seconds with two OR three passengers. I believe it is a 11 degree pitch prop. 90 hp is the max allowed on this boat. I would give Chapmans in Lapeer a phone call and have them see if you have the right prop or even the right footpint on that motor matched to your boat. (tiller motor driven boats are rated for less HP) Some have made the mistake of trying the Bigfoot 60 merc on there but it is not the right match. Check out this website, they are a ways from me but they gave me some great advice. Their phone number is 1 800 653 0490. Check out their webpage: http://www.chapmanssports.com Ask for the owner there.
