I switched to Humminbird (997 and 1157) from Lowrance (x-27 and x-38HD) this past year. I have had Lowrance, of different models, for the past 15 years. I took a couple of trips on the water playing with the units to get used to the differences. I miss some options on the lowrance, but if I switched back I would tell you I would miss some options on my new Humminbirds. The screens are easy to navigate on both units. Bottom line you will not have any issues making a switch.

I think in recent years Lowrance and Humminbird switched places. Humminbird how being the better choice of the two brands. Lowrance hard ware is nice but the software isn`t. I went from Lowrance to Vexilar just recently. Vexilars Edge is a great LCD graph. I still have a Lowrance Globalmap that works well but my X510c sonar I couldn`t live with anymore.

I have been using Lowrance for years and went to Hunningbird 997 this year
and would never go back. Much more user friendly and no problems.

My only complaint with my 997 was it did not have the ability to autosave my trials when I shut the unit off. If I did not tell the unit to save them, I would lose them. And never having to do that before with my Lowrances, I had a hard time remembering. I was hoping that they would add this but they did not. They mave by now, I dont have that unit anymore.
other than that I really liked how it operated

great!
then I have no complaints then LOL
thats another thing that should be mentioned, on the Humminbird yahoo group there are Humminbird reps who actually ask what we want out of our units and do deliever on them! I asked about this feature to be added, like I said it had not been by the time I sold it but its great to know they actually do listen and are easily accessible for questions and comments on thier units.

I am extremely pleased with Humminbird, I have 997SI and 1157 and added the Interlink feature. I switched from Lowrance, I have had a couple of questions and called their support and they pick up right away.

Take it easy Guys (chuckles) ...it's not the end of December '2008 yet! ;)
I like/luv the Humminbird pluses, great customer feed-back/service & near lack of warr use ...but will still keep my old eyes open till the end of the year...

I have run Humminbird for the last 4 seasons after running the other brand for 20 plus years, and could not be happier.
Below are a few of the reasons:
Great product pricing. Get a lot of plus for the dollars spent.
Great and fast customer support when needed.
Easy to get around in the diff programs, very user friendly.
Screen quality is great, also can read in direct sunlight and with sunglasses on.
The Side Image units are a new look at the underwater world.
Pre set buttons give you quick viewing of your favorite screens.
Check out the changes for the 700 series for 2009, only keeps getting better.
Check out the units at your local dealer.
Give me a call if i can answer any questions concerning the Humminbirds, or maybe even a on the water demo of the units i run.

I want you guys to know that the issue is not just Lowrance vs Humminbird. Do a little digging when shopping. Some of the little companys make graphs that blow away both Lowrance and Humminbird. They often have customer service that also is second to none.

Check out the Vexilar Edge 2 & 3. A little pricey but great units.

Furuno is another name I`d look at too for a sonar.
