when you guys make new trailer bunks, do you seal them with polyurothane or anything befor you put the carpet on them ?
I know that you shouldn't use treated wood especially if you have an aluminum boat because the chemica in the woodl will attack the aluminim.

Rebs,
When I made the bench seat for my Explorer, I coated the 2x12 with a couple of coats of Minwax Spar Urethane before I stapled the carpeting on.

My trailer is a '97 and I have been wondering how long bunks will last before needing replaced. Were there any indications that yours needed replacing that I can look into?
Thanks,

I am converting my roller trailer over to rear bunks and leaving the rollers on the front. So I cannot answer your question

W5 - I had an 89 bunk trailer and it was pretty much shot by 05-06. I always kept it in the garage so I didn't think much about it until I noticed the bunk slipping to a new position under the boat - the wood had rotted and the screws holding the bunk to the trailer were pulling out. You can also check them more thoroughly when the boat is off the trailer.
I would try to check the softness/hardness of the wood if possible - especially around any lag bolts, screws, etc. - that's where mine went south first.

When you buy new boards for the bunks be sure to get Douglas Fir, Do Not get soft wood like pine.....
