Has anyone heard if Lund has dropped the requirement that you must take a Mercury outboard? One of the local dealers told a customer that you can now get any outboard you want. Was this a sales pitch? Great news if true.

I think you have always been "able" to get any engine you wanted. However, Brunswick's pre rigging for Merc OB made the price difference pretty substantial.

The Lund brochure listed Honda as an option.

Theres a Lund dealer in Northrn Il. that had to take on Merc's inorder to keep the Lund brand. He also sells Honda. I was down there 2 weeks ago and they said of all the Lunds they sold this year only 2 went out the door with Merxc's on the back all the reat were E-Tec's. They also said they were getting a ton of pressure from Bruswick not to sell any Lunds without a Merc engine. Since Lund is a Bruswick company I don't think the the front office is going to change their position anytime soon. That dealer said that they thought the Honda option was going to run out fairly soon.

Brunswick did not factor in "motor loyalty" and I think it's hurting them more than they want. I think it would be great to go back to being able to power your $50,000.00 boat with any engine you want.

I was told that Lund renewed the contract with Honda last month. I believe they saw how badly it hurt their sales(down over 40%) and realized they needed to do something other than Merc only. I just hope it is not too late. I would hate to see such a good name and quality boat in Bankruptcy court.

I'd like to add that every Lund the northern Il. dealer ordered had a Merc. on it and left with a Bomb. or Honda. Therefore,he's sitting on motors he's anxious to move.

I'll bet he is!!

Pardon me, but how does this guy stay in business?

I was fairly reputable Lund dealer for many years (for example: Lund dealer of the year 2000 and 2006) and thought I kind of knew how things worked. I only retired last January.
But, this dealer has me very confused.

So he brought the boats in with Mercs and Mercury rigging and he paid for that.
Then he turns around and buys a Bomb to put on the boat ...then re-rigs the boat for a Bomb.. . sells the package... and now has Merc engines ...and a BIG pile of Merc rigging to sell.
Once he sells the engines and rigging components, he will finally climb back out of debt.
But that still didn't pay for all his de-rigging and rigging work.
His Bomb customer would pay for that.

Also... since a Lund/Honda dealer could order a Lund with a Honda and Honda rigging right from Lund, why would this dealer not order the package that way... from Lund.

He must be very wealthy.
Because banks surely aren't going to go along with such a business plan.

For many Lund dealers such a procedure would leave them with a few hundred Merc motors to get rid of each year

Do the math.. :)
This might work if you sold very small boats with very small motors ...and dang few of them

Terry Terry, Terry, there you go messin' with common sense again! LOL These threads are much more fun when we keep common sense out of the equation!

Should of checked with the dealer before I bought my new motor, maybe could have gotten a sweetheart deal on a new Merc?

Back in the spring I had no problem at all. Getting my 2008 Lund 1825 Pro Guide Tiller without a motor(And boat was ordered from Lund this way). Then the dealer mounted me a E-Tec. I asked the dealer. And he told me that he did not have any problem at all ordering a new boat without a motor and rigging.
But did have one other dealer tell me that it only came with the mercury or Honda.
So I went to south In and bought my boat.

Big Crappie - what's your source on sales down 40%?

The numbers I've heard are quite impressive, and not down. Even as bad as the economy is, not down...

In answer to the original poster, I've heard it, but I've heard the opposite too. One was from a credible source, that mentioned to just wait it out, things will phase away...

Tiller can be ordered without a motor it's the rigging for the other boats that is the cost to swap out.

The buyers of the boats he sold requested the E-Tec. Having a bunch of Merc's lying around shouldn't be a problem since they are all the same model year even if they were built 1, 2, or 3, years ago.

Shoot me an e-mail at jason@jasonhalfenoutdoors.com

Ill point you in the direction of a WI Lund dealer who will be happy to order a boat/trailer from Lund and mount your choice of motor on it...including Yamaha, Suzuki, E-tec.

I think maybe alot of folks missed my point ...
Which is:

If that dealer's gonna put a Bomb or a Yammy on it...he ain't gonna order the boat with a Merc engine on it!!!!

;) ;)

The dealer that I go through in WI told me their sales were up 60% this year!!!! But They had a new owner starting last season so I am guessing he is running things differently.

Why do People think that you cant get a Lund with out any motor other than a mercury???? You can get a lund with any engine you just have to have the dealer order your boat with out a engine on it from the lund factory. Alot of dealers just order boats and have them prerigged from the lund factory with merc on them. I am assuming its easier for them.

When we bought ours this year, one of the sales guys mentioned that next year they will no longer come pre-rigged for Merc. It may be Brunswick's position that selling both a Lund and a Merc makes the most business sense for them, thus the decision to pre-rig. But that's not how 75% of the people buy boats. No offense to Merc owners out there, but a 400 lb non-supercharged Verado block was not what I wanted (400 lbs for 75 Horse?!?)
