Someone with experience with Vexilar FL-18 and FL-12 and /or FL-20.
Looking for your opinion. 1) Are the FL-12 and FL-20 significantly easier to see under most conditions than the FL-18? (brighter? flat screen vs. sun shade?) The unit will be about 4' from my tiller position.
2) I fish shallow stained water nearly always less than 20'. In your opinion how useful is the bottom lock/zoom of the FL-18 and the zoom on the FL-20. Fish walleye, sauger , bass and crappie.

I am not sure of the brightness issue.

I have been using the 18 for several years but only for Ice fishing. But I do fish outside quite a bit and am standing when I fish so the distance would be 4'+ from my eyes to the unit. I am 5'11" tall. I have no problems fishing with this unit and being able to see. I might on occasion kneel down on a very bright sunny day.

As far as the bottom zoom? Absolutely Love it. Helps pick up the fish sitting right on the bottom. I would not give up the zoom feature. IMHO
