walleye fishing.... I fish a lot and I fish hard.. Now I live in a place where walleye are considered a junk fish. I used to be happy with the ones I got in the states but I was never what you would call a dyed in the wool waleye fishermen. Now well the ones that are popping up are so big and people claim there are too darn many of them killin off the good fish. Like Carp fo instance. Ya I didnt beleive it either. However what are the best baits for walleye in the large 10-15 lb class? Mostly I need tips on deep clear water lakes. Those are mostly what we have here. Really, lakes here get hardly any night pressure at all. So I am thinking this is worth getting into. I am tired of trout and salmon. Whactel :banghead:

i'm guessing he lives in europe and he's talking about zander, a super close (and at one time thought to be the same) relative to our walleye that grow larger than walleye.

I live in Sweden here the Walleye is called Gos-- but I also fish in England I know of lakes full of Walleye or as you said Zander that have been poisoned out becase they were killing all the carp. I live on the island of Oland off the Eastern side of Sweden. Fishing is great here the Northern pike I catch here wold be mounting size in the states . They dont much like them either. :cookoo:

Where is it that you live ? Sounds extraterrestrial if they think eyes are junk fish. I live on the island of Oland off the Southeast coast of Sweden. Rules here are a little diffrent every lake is a pay lake unless you live on it. That keeps the fishing pressure low. Walleyes have a big appitite and get blamed for over harvesting other fish. Where I live I am 35 miles Swedish miles from the closest boat launch. On the mainland I am even with the area known as Smalland where lakes and rivers are everywhere. Fishing is light and all the beaches are topless.... Ya extraterrestrial would describe it - Almost - But if ya ever get a chance ask any Englishmen what they think of Walleyes and then ask them why...

if they act like our walleye do in the fall, thin crank baits (like no.13 rapalas, reef runner ripsticks, etc.) long lined if they are shallow, or with a snap weight to get it to the depth that they are holding would be a pretty good bet.

Line counter reels really become helpful with this. Once you combine line counter trolling reels, the precision trolling book, and snap weights or diving crankbaits, it is a pretty deadly combination.

If they act like more inland walleye, and flooded timber is the norm, slip bobber rigs with leeches or shiners could be deadly too. This can also be used for "humps" in the bottom (sunken islands) in the mid-teen depths.

Hope this at least gets ya someplace.

Walleye spawn in the spring in rivers/rivermouths/over gravel type reefs in the lake. jigs and minnows work real well here.

A lot but it picks up a lot of northern pike. The Reef runner ripstick now that is a new one! I am going to have to check that out for sure. Very few places here have live bait. So I have to catch my own and try to keep it alive , or stick to artificals. Now this I am not sure of but I used to catch some walleyes on a lure called an illuminus Arbogaster do they still make them ? As for the beach pictures I got a few laying around here someplace all the touriests are back at thier jobs and stuff right now but in the meantime I have a ton of northern pike photos. Dozens in the 15 - thirty lb class...... ??????????+
Whactel and thanks I am getting an idea of things.

You might try the Dutch website http://www.effevisse.nl/ about "snoek, barrs, snoekbarrs" or in English pike, perch and zanders. It's in Dutch and unfortuntately the English version is "under construction". I'm assuming you are literate in Swedish; so you may have a chance at understanding the Dutch. Most Dutch also speak English, but prefer not to let on, if they can get away with it at least in the Netherlands, but it looks to me like these guys are true sportsman and may be quite willing to help. From their published photos they fish a lot of plugs and those are not what are commonly used in the US, either.

Zander and walleye taste very much the same on the plate, look and behave generally similar, but do have a bit different spawning habit. They nest as I understand it rather than broadcast their eggs. At any rate effevisse's got a photo album of some very, very nice fish of all three types, that normal American waters cannot duplicate! American perch fishermen will not believe the sizes of some of the European perch either. Also there are some photos of European catfish that would make a person think twice about swimming in European rivers.

There is also a growing appreciation for zeds as zanders are often called in Britian where they are not native any more than they are in Sweden, and generally not any better liked there either. You might try googling on "zed" for British fishing clubs and their techniques.

another thing you can try is to build your own crawler harnesses (google that on the web), it is easy and the components are cheap. then get some berkley gulp! Try that instead of live bait. I know guys up here that use them quite often for walleyes, and they do work at least decently.

Several times when I have fished the Red River at Selkirk Manitoba I have met fisherman from across the big water that go to the Red for CARP. They have 10' rods with light line and fish their little tails off for Carp. Seems like a long ways to come to catch Carp but I guess that is their fish of choice.

Crankbaits will serve you well on deep and suspended Zander/Gos. Record Zander are taken regularly on Salmo Whitefish and Hornets in your region. Salmo has a very avid fallowing in Europe for Gos and pike.

Giant Zander feed more like a Muskie in early and late seasonal patterns and baits as large as the Salmo Fatso have produced monster Gos in rivers where they stage to spawn and again when they feed up for winter in late fall.

Take a peek at the Salmo Poland web site and you should find some good tips on crankbaits that work well in your region.
