I have a nine year old 40 hp four cycle Johnson. That I use on my 16 fishing boat. The motor probably spends 90% of the time trolling. I have a chance to pick up a 40 hp four cycle Yamaha to replace it. Would I be gaining or loseing if I do this?
THANKS reddog111

Your Johnson motor has a Susuki power head, there shouldn't be much difference in the performance. You didn't say what year the Yammy is, you might gain a newer unit?

I can see no way you'd be losing.
(You'll be parting with some money...but getting a great motor)

Not sure if the yammy is a 4 cyl or a 3 cyl - if you like troll very slowly and it's a 3 cyl, think hard about it - the 3 cyl is based on the merc powerhead design and doesn't troll down nearly as low as the 4 cyl model based on the yammy powerhead. Personal experience talking - had to switch out from a 3 cyl merc. efi 40hp to to 4 cyl yammy 40hp to troll slow wnough without bags.
Unless the yammy has the VTS capability.
