Plan to fish sturgeon off shoreSt Clair river any help would be appreciated regarding line ...bait ..rod reel ...and shore rod holder

Take this for what it's worth...
I fished in the Fraser River in BC last year with a great guide. We caught 30 or so fish from 2'- 7'. If memory serves me, we used large Penn Reels, Pool Cue rods of about 6', 75# test Maxima or so, 10/0 Circle Gamakatsu Hooks above 5 oz of weight, and used cut bait of various types available in the Fraser, the best baits were soaked in Pink Borax. We simply found holes and fished the head end of them on the drop off and cast to various depths.
To me, it was like fishing for 10' Catfish that jump like Marlin. I'm definitely going again!
The Sturgeon Assoc. in BC was doing a large tagging study so I also got to tag fish and read tags via a computer wand. The oldest fish we caught was estimated at 70 YEARS old. Luckily, BC is now protecting this resource.
