: New Lowrance Warning -GPS pucks

Picked the boat up from getting some warranty work the other day and the tech gave me a notice from Lowrance in regards to the GPS pucks not being able to take heat. The warning reads:

"Your unit has been designed to operate or be stored at temperatures up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. On extremely hot days, this temperature can easily be exceeded when placed within a few inches underneath a dark boat cover in direct sunlight. This can also happen on an automobile's package shelf or dashboard in direct sunlight with the windows up.

For the best protection against heat damage to your unit, we recommend you place this product in a storage compartment away from windows or the boat cover when its not in use."

I am to believe that they can't make a product that can take the heat? I am really expected to take my GPS puck off the boat all summer when trailering the boat around or leaving next to the house in the summer?

Any one else see this notice?

leave your computer on the dash of your car or under your black boat cover for a day and see how it works. These units lowrance or humminbird are all the same. heat kills electronics why do you think laptop computers have such a high rate of failure or you have to get anew one so often if you use it everyday with out a cooling pad underneath.

I know that Eagle is or at least was part of Lowrance. So are the Eagle units having the same problems that the Lowrance units seem to be having?

the manual says the same thing about the units themselves...

this is straight from the manual

The storage temperature for your unit is from -4 degrees to +167
degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees to +75 degrees Celsius). Extended
storage in temperatures higher or lower than specified will damage
the liquid crystal display in your unit. This type of damage is not
covered by the warranty. For more information, contact the factory's
Customer Service Department; phone numbers are inside the
manual's back cover.

My gps ant is mounted to my dash with velcro. Maybe I will start taking it off when I know its going to be exposed to heat like that. The boat is normally under covered storage though and does not get the sun beating down on it

. Glad I used velcro LOL

so does this mean we should remove them from the boat during the winter months? maybe so, mine worked last fall when I put the boat away, first time out in the spring it didn't work and had to get a new puck, and the puck was less than a year old.

not sure that the newer units are having probelms, but my 2001 units have been stored out in the sun, under a tarp and all 3 still work fine. the past 2 years the boat has been inside the garage.

The units are liquid Crystal, that means liquid and are subject to deterioration from extreme heat or freezing. I don't think that normal everyday use would affect them in a negative way.

So I guess if they are flush mounted, we need to unmount them up here in MN so they don,t freeze in an unheated storage area?

I removed mine so far as my boat is docked at the Marina in the hot Summer days but I don't think it can get to over 75 Celsius in the hot Summer day with the boat covered right? Or am I wrong? 25Degree more and the lake will be boiling.........hmm.......

Both of my Lowrance units have been on the dash of my boat for three years in the sun, under a black cover. Whenever I forget something in the boat after a days fishing, and have to unsnap a corner of the cover and crawl into the boat, I am instantly covered in sweat and can barely breathe.

The units have been flawless for three years.

Seems theres some confusion about what were talking about. Are you asking about the individuale puck that is mounted seperatly from the screen unit? If so can someone tell me how the thing is removed?

Two Issues :

#1 the GPS puck antenna cannot take extreme cold or heat and then fail needing to be replaced.:deadhorse:

#2 that actual display units screen can freeze in extra cold weather and fail , not subject to warranty claims, but also needing to be replaced.:deadhorse:

Yep I got that so how does the puck come off. Is it a simple twist and remove or more involved?

It has a cable too that has to be taken apart. As well as 4 screws that hold mine down . :bangin:. Could have a twist on set up too:cheers:

I have 5 to take off the boat now:banghead:

3 Lowrance , 2 Humminbirds:cheers:

I ran a 332 on the dash of my truck along with the GPS puck being on the dash for 3 years with no ill effects. This sat in my truck from -35 to God knows how hot in 100 degree heat under a windshield? That unit is no on the bow of my boat and still works great.

I do computer consulting. In one evening in South Dakota (very cold) I forgot my laptop computer in the car. So that was for like 9 hours. The liquid crystal screen on the computer froze completely. I take all of my electronics off the boat for the winter and the batteries out...I don't mess with them in the summer because the boat is garaged. I have far to much invested in equipment to let over heat or freeze and cannot afford to be without them or buy new ones.

Garage or basement stored .....
I don't take mine off - when I'm out...
Bottom line , don't expect your equipment to endure something you can't yourself!
