what do you guys use to plug the holes when you have to move the transducer over about 5 inches on the transom ?

Are you screwing directly into the transom or do you have a transom board mounted? If your moving on a transom board, the holes left shouldn't matter as hopefully fasteners weren't used that go all the way through the board. If you don't have a mounting board, now would be a great time to add one. In addition to giving you future mounting/moving surface the board will help you seal off the holes you are going to be creating by moving your current position. Just fill the old holes with silicone and cover with the board (I usually run a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the board face that will contact the transom as well). If you don't have and don't want to add a transom board, then at the very least silicone fill the holes or better yet, silicone fill and add a pan head screw to "cap off" and seal the holes. You can always paint the heads to match the transom if you don't want the screw heads to stand out.

and make sure you use a 3M #4200 or #5200 product, rather than just a silicone sealant. The 3M product is meant for "under-waterline" use.
