Either someone is pulling your chain or the info you got was from a source that knows little about Skaneateles Lake.
There are no walleyes in Skaneateles and as fas as the fish poulations beig large, that's a huge overstatement.
It's primarily a Rainbw Trout, Atlantic Salmon lake, cold and clear ut the fish are mainly put and take as the DEC stocks the lake yearly with these species and because of the lack of forage, they rarely get big enough to raise an eyebrow although on occassion, a big lake r will be caught.
There's a decent number of yellow perch there and some are really big but again, they tend to be on the skinny side even if they're 12 to 14 inches.
The smallmouth fishery is OK but with Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka and Oneida lake within a short drive, there's no reason to waste your time on Skaneateles.
The water is clean and there's no advisory on the fish but the fish seem to taste very bland from that lake.
Beautiful lake and area but not much public access. State launch on the West shore a few miles down the lake and that's about it.
I'd look to Seneca,Cayuga or Kueka lake first if I were you.

Owasco Lake, just west of Skaneateles, has a growing population of Walleyes. Public launch at Emerson Park at the north end in the town of Auburn. At the south end in Moravia is the South Shore Marina, a private facility with a launch, bait and tackle store, and they can set you up with cabin rentals. Also a state park in Moravia which might have camping. It's a great lake with not alot of boat traffic, approx. 8 miles long and depths to just over 200 feet. Check out nyfisherman.com and look up the NY DEC region 7 report for fishing info. Looks like it's just perch they are getting now. I usually fish Owasco for trout, got a 30" Laker a couple years ago. I'm going to try and target some Walleye this year in the evening.
