I was wondering if these reels where any good. How is the drag? How is the counter? It says they have 2bb and brass gearing. I picked up 4 for 25.00 apiece. Would they be good for salmon fishing? Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have eight of the Shakespeare line counter reels, in two different sizes, and have used all of them for the last two years. The drag: Is excellent! I am very impressed with it, especially for a reel in it's price range. I use mine for walleye, steelhead, and salmon trolling, and they work great for all. The line counter: well, it's okay. Now don't get me wrong, I think they work fine, but I think they could improve them a little. They seem a little loose in the gearing (The line counter gears, not the main reel. The main gears seem to be great.) However, I haven't found a reel with a perfect line counter... yet. I am sure the line counter reels of the future will be improved!... I hope. Anyway, if you got 4 reels for $100.00, then you did good. Just use them, and enjoy them!

I used the reels for a year, and thought the reel itself was great. It has a great drag, and seemed very solid. The line counter is a different story. I had two of them quit working, they wouldn't reset. The little button wouldn't reset the number spools, so I took them apart, and found that the gears were plastic, and didn't seem to match up any longer, so I got rid of them. As far as the reel itself, it was a good solid reel for the money.
