: Lowrance 522 Problem ?
Trollin 227 09-25-2008, 04:21 PM I have a lowrance 522 Igps, for the last year and a half it has worked great. This last week while on a trip up north the depth would randomly change to read 1.8 fow regardless of actual depth or bottom conditions. This seemed to be totally random I could not get the unit to do this on purpose. I tried adjusting the sensitivity and ping speed with no effect. Powering off or unplugging the unit while it was doing this also had no effect. Sometimes it would last for 2 min sometimes for 20. Sorry for the long post I think I have included everything. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
My guess is you have a transducer that is failing. I would call Lowrance and explain the problem, they will likely just send you a new one.

Johnnielund 09-26-2008, 09:40 AM I have the same problem. Lowrance has sent me three transducers and they all work the same! The end of last season I sent my unit back to Lowrance. They sent it back with a note that said "everything checks out fine"
I have all the latest software updates and I still get the same thing (loss of bottom). To work around this problem, I go to the "sonar" page, un-check the "auto-depth" box, then set the depth range I'm in. This seems to help. My GPS is another story. That keeps giving me the message "position lost", then a few seconds / minutes later "position acquired". I have not figured out a solution for this yet. It sure does pay to buy "the best", when you're looking for trouble free operation and great customer service!
lou gill 09-27-2008, 07:17 PM I had the same problems, asked my dealer he told me that there are 3 junction points in the boat, one under the GPS ant, one under the dash before it goes into the unit and 1 in the bow. Found all 3 and tightened all the connections......everything is back to working great. My dealer told me that they will loosen up and they need to be tight.
Hope this helps

Are these junction points on the cable for the transducer, or some other cable?

I just noticed the "Depth Loss" problem on my LCX27C while first time fishing in less then 10FOW and in weeds(I used it downrigging in more then 50FOW before), I called my dealer first and he told me to make sure that the unit was in "SHALLOW WATER" mode, I told him that I tried that and it didn't help much)
I then called Lowrance and they told me to uncheck the auto depth option and manually set the depth range of whatever depth I was fishing in, their explanation was that the unit is too powerful and if left in "AUTO DEPTH" the signal coming back is too strong, so by setting it manually for shallower depth it should reduce the power it puts out and fix the problem, I am going to try that on the next outing and see if that helps,
in any case, its quite the PITA if you ask me, why have the "AUTO Depth" feature and why should we have to go through this every time we fish different depth/structures? sounds like a software problem and Lowrance should fix it IMO.

Luke,
It is the gray and blue LowranceNET™ connections that can come loose. In my boat I have a gps ant. in the stern where the LowranceNET™ hooks up the gps, transducer, then the 520 on the dash, but under the dash there is another LowranceNET™ connection that hooks up the rear with the bow 520, and behind the bow 520 there is another LowranceNET™ connection. I found all 3, and retightened the each connection and that did the trick.....there are about 3 connections on each LowranceNET™ the could come loose!
Hope this helps!

About the GPS-story : Is it internal or external antenna? Has it a clear view to the sky in all directions?
Take a look at ste STATUS page. How many satelites do paint blue? Another possibility: check if you have WAAS REQUIRED enabled. Try disabling WAAS REQUIRED; I guess your problem will disappear.

Is this the reason some guys are not experiencing the problem with their units?
I for one, adjust my depth manually, never in auto.
fisher-1 10-17-2008, 05:55 PM Update on my LCX 27C:
Did the software update(2.4.0) and followed Thorne Bros video instructions,
selected "shallow water" option,(in sonar features)
selected "200khz only" transducer option (in sonar setup)
left the "Auto depth" OFF (also tried it ON with same results)
I was out musky hunting for 6 hours today in all kinds of depths, as shallow as 2 FOW, over all kinds of weeds & depths and the unit worked fine. no bottom loss, depth flashing or false readings. so far so good, hope I didn't jinx it by posting this.
