Minnesota Master Angler program unveiled.

Minnesotans, with some skill and some luck, can now earn the title of Minnesota Master Angler.

This new program, sponsored by G. Loomis Rods, Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), recognizes anglers who catch large fish that meet size or weight criteria.

Master Angler awards will be available each calendar year for more than 50 fish species. There are categories for adults and youth both in weight for harvested fish and in length for catch-and-release.

Examples of qualifying Master Angler standards for walleye: 26 inches released length; 6 pounds, 5 ounces harvested weight; 24 inches released length for youth; and 5 pounds 1 ounce harvested weight for youth.

Awards are available on three levels.

Master Angler, available to any legal angler who has caught and released or harvested one trophy fish that qualifies by length or weight Expert Angler, available to any legal angler who has caught and released or harvested three trophy fish of three different species that qualify by length or weight.

A Master Angler must submit the applications for two additional qualifying fish at the same time to be awarded the Expert Angler award.

Grand Master Angler, available to any legal angler who has caught and released or harvested five trophy fish of five different species that qualify by length or weight; an Expert Angler must submit the applications for the two additional fish at the same time.

"The Master Angler program provides an opportunity to honor anglers for their successes and to recognize successful angling in Minnesota," said Jennifer Matthees, the DNR's aquatic education supervisor.

Contest details, rules, qualifying sizes for each species, and application forms are available on the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame Web site at www.minnesotafishinghalloffame.com.
