It was a chilly start for the first morning of the Cabelas MWC Championship, here in Dundee/Trenton, as the 36 qualifying teams blasted off in search of the elusive Walleye.
All teams are restricted to the Detroit River today, due to a forecast with winds expected to gust to 25-30mph out of the WNW. Waves, 3-5 feet will be building to 6-8 feet later this afternoon.

A few of the teams spoke with me, and told me what they might be expecting today, since most prefished the Lake and spent very little time in the river. Yesterday was the "VIP fish with a Pro" day, and everyone was restricted to the river, so that is basically all the prefishing time most had on the river this week.

The first team I ran into was the Wisconsin team of Dave Schmidt and Mark Zillges.

Juls: Good morning guys...a bit chilly this morning...brrrr! So, you're restricted to the river today...what are you expecting to do today?

Dave: Well, we were restricted to the river yesterday, and we found some fish, so we should be ok. Your not going to see the big weights that you would see come from out on the big lake, but I think we're going to see a lot of fish come in today.

Don Olson (partner, Mike Olson): Yesterday, our game plan was to handline, poleline, and pull spinners, and we didn't catch very many...a lot of smallmouth bass, but not a lot of Walleye. So, today we're going to jig all day long! (he said with a chuckle).

Jeff Koester (partner, Scott Rhodes): I think the river is going to be challenging for everybody. Most of everyone's prefishing time was spent out on the lake. We did kind of come into the river the last couple days of practice to try to find something, and we did utilize yesterday's event to eliminate some more water. Hopefully, we can go to a spot where we caught a few fish here and there the last couple of days and try to catch something. They're not very big...we did catch a couple short fish, but if we can just try to survive here today then that's the goal.

Juls: Have you seen a forecast? Does it look like you're going to be able to get out on Lake Erie in the next couple of days? I know you and Scott are pretty tough to beat on this lake.

Jeff: You know, it's so iffy. I mean, when it gets to be this time of year, one weather forecast will tell you one thing and another forecast will tell you another. So, right now we're anticipating the river today and possibly again tomorrow. On Saturday it looks to be laying down, but that can change here in a 1/2 hour, so we may or may not get out there at all.

Greg Yarbrough (partner, Jeff Manz): I haven't fished the river in the Fall in quite a while, but we're probably going to do a little bit of handlining, and a little bit of jigging. I'm kind of excited, because this is where I grew up...Gibralter right here...so, I got a lot of little spots to check. So, hopefully, we're going to get out there and catch a limit of fish. That's the plan anyway! (He says laughing)

Kevin McQuoid (partner karen): Our goal is just to catch five fish! We were out here yesterday and it's going to be tough. There's not going to be many five fish limits brought to the scales today.

Join us this afternoon as Walleye Central brings you coverage of the 2008 Cabelas Masters Walleye Circuit Championship through a LIVE webcast from the Cabelas store in Dundee, MI!

The weigh-in is expected to begin around 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

All teams are expected back at the ramp at 3:30, where they will have their fish bumped dead or alive, and then they will trailer their rigs/fish to the Cabelas store which is approximately and hour drive from the ramp. (Actual time is dictated by traffic conditions...there is a lot of construction going on between the store and the ramp right now).
