Rob Lampman and Harry Miller Move into First Place!

Today, the Lake Erie waters of Michigan and Ohio were opened up for the 36 teams fishing the 2008 Cabelas MWC Championship out of Dundee, MI.

After being restricted to the Detroit River only yesterday, due to wind and lake conditions, everyone ventured out onto the lake today to see if the wind had muddied her up to bad to fish, and to see if they could find some Walleye willing to bite their offerings.

Compared to only one full limit brought in yesterday, 17 of the 36 teams managed to fill their limits this afternoon.

In the top spot after the weigh-in today is the team of Rob Lampman of Desoto, WI and his partner, Harry Miller of Bellevue, IA who weighed in the largest basket of fish for the tournament so far with 26.85 pounds, bringing their total weight up to 32.33 pounds!

Rob Lampman: We knew it was going to be a rough ride today, and there were 4-5 footers over near our spot...so, the plan was to get five fish in the boat and that's what we did.
We probably could have spent another 1/2 hour to 45 minutes worth, but we made the decision to take that extra time to make it in safely. So, here we are...we're going to let the cards fall where they may.

Harry Miller: It was quite a long run...I think our format will be the same thing tomorrow, and weather permitting, which I think it will be, we'll be making the long run again.

Rob: Yep, we'll stick to plan "A".

In second place is yesterday's leaders, Jeff Zawicki of Muskego, WI and his partner Tom Sowinski of Hartford, WI. They brought in a 5 fish limit weighing in at 17.82 for a total today of 29.84 pounds.

Juls: How was your day in the boat today gentlemen?

Jeff: We got out to the lake today, which was good, because that's where the bigger fish are. It was a little dirty in our first spot. We got one, and we started talking...saying, "it's too dirty". So, we moved up ahead a little bit, a couple miles, and we got our other four fish. We only had 5 bites today, so we were happy to get those five fish in the boat. Cleaner water seemed to be the key.

Juls: What were you guys feeling in the boat this morning? Here you are, sitting in first place going out...tell us what that feels like?

Jeff: There was a little anxiety this morning...you know, you're in first, but we caught a fish right away, and that kind of took the edge off. Then the second, third and fourth came pretty quick, when the camera guy got in the boat. He got in the boat and we had a fish on in like ten seconds! He didn't even get the mics on us before that fish hit. (They both laugh at the memory of it). Then we got the other two, and we just sat on those four for a while. It seemed like forever, but that last one finally came about 20 minutes before it was time to head back to the launch.

Tom: At one point, when we were waiting on the 5th fish, we were going to make a move, and go to our third spot, but we talked it over and we both agreed that it would be best to keep the baits in the water.

Jeff: It would have taken us a good 45 minutes to get to that other spot...set up again, and then try to figure it out. We knew there were some fish in the area where we were, so it all worked out and our decision and patience paid off. We got a little lucky that way.

Tom: Yeah, we got lucky!

The Father and Son team of Tom and Ryan Jirik remain in third place today, after weighing in a nice basket of Walleye that tipped the scales at 17.80 pounds for a total weight of 28.58 pounds.

Juls: How does it feel to be sitting in third place after two days of fishing?

Tom Jirik: Not too bad! I'm a little bit surprised. I thought we had more weight today than we really did, and I thought for sure we would have fallen down into the 10th place area, and we didn't...so, that feels pretty good!

Juls: How was your day in the boat today?

Ryan: We made a pretty good run today. It wasn't really too bad! We were making pretty good time this morning, and we had a fish in the boat before 10:00a.m., so that helped our confidence.

Tom: We made a 26 mile run this morning, and we were running the trough, so it wasn't too bad. Coming back it was smooth, a smooth ride all the way.

In fourth place is the team of Jeff Manz of Vanderbilt, MI and Greg Yarbrough of Port Clinton, OH who brought in a limit weighing in at 20.33 pounds, bringing their total weight up to 27.85 pounds.

In fifth place is the team of Koester and Rhodes, who brought in the only 5 fish limit yesterday, and another 5 fish limit today, weighing in at 16.70 pounds to round out their total to 27.26 pounds.

In 6th place is the Ohio team of Dan Gies and Matt Davis who brought their own 5 fish limit in today with 17.58 pounds...bringing their total to 26.99 pounds.

Juls: How does it feel to be in the top ten today guys? Do you think you can come back and win this event tomorrow?

Matt: Yeah! We're less than 5 1/2 pounds out so...We've got some ideas of where we want to go tomorrow. We want to try and get some better fish. There's a big bag out there...we just have to find them, and get them keyed in. We've got some ideas on it.

Juls: What's your game plan tomorrow?

Matt: Today we ran about 25-30 miles. We actually looked at a couple spots on the way, and it was smoother than we thought it was going to be, so we went ahead and traveled a little bit, looking at water clarity. We found water that was borderline fishable and unfishable close to where we had been prefishing and the fish were there, and that's where we got most of our fish. Then we hit a couple other spots late in the day, and did manage to get one upgrade.

Juls: Is there anyone else fishing around you? Or, are you alone?

Dan: There's about 4 to 5 boats out where we were today, but we're not going back there again tomorrow.

Matt: We've got some ideas and we're going to do some looking. We think we know where there is a bigger bag. We were worried that the water might be muddy, but we've already looked at the satellite picture from today, and on the way back from the ramp I had the computer going, and we pretty much made up our mind on where to go after looking at that.

Juls: Wait! Wait! You've got a wireless card? (I start laughing)

Dan and Matt: (both laughing AT me) You could have used that this morning Juls! We missed you at the launch this morning!
