I was at a local watering hole tonight. I ordered a beer and it was slow in the bar. I was there with a friend and we were talking to the bar owner/bartender. The topic was fishing. Started off talking about reels then we went to electronics. The owner stated that he didn't believe in them as the fish didn't have a chance. I heard this guy out. He blamed fish finders for depleting brook trout stocks in inland lakes.
His statement was and I quote "You may as well hunt from an airplane."
He then started calling people who use electronics as and I quote again "Simple People".
I summed the conversation up here as he ranted for a good twenty minutes. All I said was "Can you hold while trolling at a consistant depth of 15 feet?" He replied that he didn't need to that he still caught fish.
Well this guy just sent me over the edge!!! I just got up and left.
I had an answer for everything he said but I just couldn't listen to this guy anymore.
#1 People kill fish and deplete stocks not fish finders. Please do not put me in that classification. If you compare hunting from an airplane the same as fishing with electronics.....well all I have to say is you still have to convince the fish to bite what you are offering.
#2 Calling me simple for using electronics??? At least I know how to turn the thing on and can tell the difference between a rock and a fish!!! Still that doesn't let me have a sure thing for hooking that fish.
#3 My buddy started to agree with this fool!!!! That's what really killed me! He said that he doesn't need a fish finder to catch fish. Well guess what? He's absolutly positively correct!!!! It's only because he's sitting in the front of my boat while I'm reading the finder!!!!!!!
Well I'm done ranting. If you can add to this please do.

You should have to show your license just to get in a bar. There's more fish caught and game shot in a bar than any place else on earth ! LOL Must be related to the product consumed.

The truth is people caught lots of fish before depthfinders came
along. People also wasted lots of time fishing 10 feet down in
100 feet of water.
I wouldnt want to fish without one anymore. The depthfinder cant
make fish bite just make your fishing time more efficient.
It takes all kinds though doesnt it? I hope the guy was just
trying to get you goin because depth finders have been around
for decades now and there are still fish left. His argument is
old and tired.
By the way...Nice to hear from you again Mahumba.

Some folks are very resistant to change. Perhaps your "friend" was uncomfortable with technology or unable to afford the investment, or actually oppossed to technology in fishing. Underwater cameras are the next battle front. I venture to say, some tourneys and maybe even some lakes will ban their use. I do not currently use an underwater camera, but look forward to trying one. I am sure it is eductational. To me, it all gets down to the respect for the resource and taking only what you will eat. Unquestionably, CPR has done and will continue to benefit our resources.

Jim you hit the nail on the head.I think if someone took the time to show this guy how to use a locator he would not leave without it.Its all in the presentation. Then set the hook!

Let me also state that I respected his point of view until he started cutting me up for using a fish finder.
I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion. My opinion is that airplanes can't fly. Now..........does that opinion have merit? I don't thinks so. But it's still mine.

P'ing off his customers shows you his level of smarts. I''ll bet you one of his beers that he also keeps everything he catches and assumes that everyone else does also, so if you are using a sonar and catching more fish than he is that he is not getting his fair share! Typical jealous, "if you've got one and a I don't then it must be wrong" mentality. There is an old say about being kicked by a mule - consider the source at which point you will forget about it.

This bartender is an example of the resource material that generates many, many one-liners, such as:
It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it.
It is difficult to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.
The elevator doesn't reach the top floor.
The canoe is afloat, but the paddles don't reach the water.
(and one of my favorites)
It ain't against the law to be stupid!.......... Now, it may be against the law to ACT stupid, but just being stupid is still legal.
In my humble opinion, if someone does not want to use the modern tools and conveniences, they can sit on a stump with a cane pole and a hook on a string and will probably litter the bank with beer cans and bait containers. I am no great fisherman, but I enjoy it on the few occasions that I get out. I bring home a few fish each year and enjoy them. I like to use electronics to keep my boat off the rocks so I don't need to be rescued, so I don't get lost, and also to tell me if I am trying to fish the DEAD SEA. I think it is a wise use of resources and considerate of others to be safe and more efficient, especially when many of us don't have a lot of free time on the water. When you consider the fact that a fishfinder looks at an area that is usually no bigger than an average size room, I don't think that is unfair at all. After all, how large is the body of water? Personally, I think you were very generous with your time (and money) to stay and listen to the guy as long as you did. Oh, well.............................................. ...............

I suppose the guy still uses a cane pole with a string attached to it instead of a graphite rod and spinning reel. Sure it makes it easier to locate fish with electronics but your choice of bait and how it is presented is what catches the fish. You did the right thing by giving your opinion then listening to his before you couldn't take anymore.
