What is a good place to figure out what should be offered on a used boat&motor. Also the trailer. Is running it in the driveway with the "ears" on the motor and hose give a good indication, or is it necessary to have it under load? Thx.

Run the boat under load if at all possible. If you and seller are both happy, then thats a good price. You could check WC classifieds or some other sites to see what comparable boats are bringing.

You can check out NADA and get someware to start but it looks like it is a good time to be a buyer right now. There are a ton of nice boats in the clasified section here on WC and the prices seem to keep droping.
I bought and sold two boats on WC and had very good luck with both deals. Just make sure you go and look at them with your own two eyes first.
Good luck!

Most folks on other sites advise having a "leak down test" and a "compression test" to give the best indication of the condition of the motor. When I buy my boats, I get the serial number run by a dealer to find out what work has been done on it. If that checks out, I go for a ride and drive like I'm gonna drive (no I don't beat someone else's boat... but I stop and punch it a couple of times, run it WOT, get her good and hot, etc.). Then offer what you think is fair... and go from there. While the above tests will not guarentee anything, they are a great indicator and certainly a very wise place to start, when making serious inquiries about a boat and motor.

Great information and will follow it. Didnt think of the serial # . What is a leak down test? If an offer is made it will be contingent on a dealer doing a evaluation on the motor. THX

I believe it has to do with how long it takes each cylinder to lose pressure when the test is done. Others who are a little better informed can give you the technical description of that. Or, visit bassboatcentral.com and go to the motor threads and page through them. There are a couple or really good mechanics on there who give great information (Ssimpala and EuropeanAM are their handles)...
