: Prop Question - TourneySport 185 & 150 Suzuki
I'm getting about 47 MPH GPS with me, one other person, livewells empty, 1/2 gas or less and not too much gear. I'm not that concerned about going faster.
But, I am wondering about RPM's. The manual calls for operating between 5000 - 6000 and I'm able to coax this rig over 6000 to probably 6200 pretty easily. I can trim it and get to 6000 RPM and have what I think is a fair amount of throttle left. "Fair amount" is relative - it's not THAT much, but I can "easily" get over 6000 RPM.
I've got a three blade 21 pitch Suzuki prop. Also, 15R which I'm guessing is 15 inch diameter? Stainless Steel too.
Are any of you with the same/similar rig running a 22 pitch prop and will that give me better performance on the high end?
"AllenW" I think you have a similar rig.
I'm really satisfied with the performance now. Good hole shot and mid range, for me. But Im just wondering if a 22 pitch would keep me from overrevving if I am interested in opening 'er up once in awhile and how much impact there would be to lower end performance.
Thanks in advance.
AllenW 10-10-2008, 11:39 AM Close, I have the 150 Yammie on mine.
I'll have to check when I get home as I don't remember prop specs, but set up with a addtional T-8 kicker and loaded like your boat I'd get 48+ mph and about 5500/5600 rpm with ideal conditions.
6000 max rpm on the yammie
Usually I get about 45mph fully loaded with two large people, full livewells, fishing gear, cooler and whatever else we bring along, don't remember rpm though.
Not a expert on props, but I think I'd be happier under reving a little than over reving like you are

30inwalleye 10-10-2008, 04:17 PM I would think that if you went with a 21p four blade that might put you better into your RPM range. I dont think you would lose much if any top end because a four blade prop should lift your boat further out of the water thus decreasing drag
AllenW 10-10-2008, 04:26 PM PAS, I have a Yamaha Reliance series 19-m 13 3/4 prop

Hot Runr Guy 10-10-2008, 05:31 PM PAS, 150 Suzukis run a much lower (higher numerically) lower unit than the AllenW's Yamaha. The 'zuki has a 2.50:1, the yami a 2.0:1. They will run different pitch props, so the comparison is not quite apples to apples. Sounds like a 22" pitch may do the trick for you, to get the revs down a bit.

jerz21 10-11-2008, 09:14 PM I've got the 185 Tourney Sport with the 175 Suzuki. I know, not apples to apples, but pretty close as the 150 and 175 are the same block but the 175 has VVT and a little higher RPM rating. I'm running a Suzuki 14 3/4 x 23 pitch and typically run around 5900-6000 RPM. Speed with two people and half a tank, full rear livewell and gear is in the 50-51 mph range GPS.
As mentioned, the lower unit ratio is a bit different on the Suzuki than the Yamaha, so you'd typically see a larger diameter & pitch prop on the Suzuki. I'd agree and think a 22 pitch might be what you're looking for.

I would have to ask when you are trimming up are you gaining speed or just raising RPM. If speed is not going up then your creating more prop slip then your set up can handle.
Thanks, TomP.
I do continue to gain speed as I trim up. This boat is much more "sensitive" than my last..........I mean, you really can feel the performance even with small adjustments to trim as you increase speed. The boat rides high in the water compared to my last.........I mean, the spray comes from in back when I'm up on plane and at speed.
