In my individual interviews, I asked these gentlemen all the same questions:
1. How many years have you fished the PWT?
2. What are your most memorable memories over the years since 1989?
3. What are your feelings or thoughts on the ending of an era...the PWT?
4. What are your plans for next year?
On the tournament at hand:
5. How was your prefishing?
6. Besides yourself, who do you think will win this tournament, and why?
7. How much weight do you think it will take to win this event?
Tom Backer:
1. I've fished the PWT for 15 years.
2. My most memorable moments in the PWT, obviously, is one of the ones when I won an event in Chamberlain, SD. That would be have to be one of the most memorable.
One of my "fishing" most memorable moments is, as alwasy, fishing with my daughter! (you hear the love and excitement in his voice when he says that, but he doesn't expand on his thoughts. Just sharing time with his daughter is enough...it's not one particular thing that makes it memorable).
3. I tell you what...this week, we've been focused on this tournament. We've got a tough tournament going on here in Hudson.
The bite...well, we've got a lot of quality fish in this system, but the bite is kind of ...well, kind of "slow".
The PWT? I think everybody is sad to see it go away. It's been part of our life for 15 years, and we'll miss it.
4. Well, I haven't really decided yet what my plans are for next year. This year, along with the PWT, I did fish the FLW circuit.
I have invested in the new AIM circuit too.
I am sure I am going to be fishing that circuit, and we'll see what happens after that.
5. (When asked about his prefishing here this week, it was a two word response) Terrible prefishing.(He shakes his head and shrugs).
6. I think it's going to be... It's going to be one of the many local sticks who entered. A guy like, Nick Johnson, Scott Allar, or whatever...those guys are local, and they're going to be really tough to beat here.
Mark Courts answers the same questions:
1. I've fished the PWT since 2000.
2. Well, obviously, both my wins. There was Mobridge in 2006, and then there was this year's championship on Saginaw Bay this past April.
So, those two are obviously the two greatest memories I have.
3. We hate to see something like this go away...they really are the icon of the sport and it's where it all started, so...it's one of those deals where it's unfortunate, but it's business. We understand that.
As Walleye anglers we have to move forward and continue to grow.
4. Fish, fish, and fish somemore! I'm not sure. I have to wait and see what the schedules are. I'm obviously going to fish something on the Walleye side, but I'll continue to fish the Bass side too. I'm looking forward to that, and continuing to grow that.
6. There's a lot of good anglers...a lot of good LOCAL anglers, that are fishing this tournament...(he switches toughts and continues with conditions of the river right now)...
The way that the system is right now, I don't know that it's....it's going to be tough to tell...because, any given spot, if it gets right, can produce 30 pounds....and, right now, it's not right.
It might change in the next day or two, so the guy that's in the right spot when those fish decide to start biting, is going to be the guy to win.
7. Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 42 pounds will win it. You know, I might be way off too. 14 a day is going to be tough, and a limit a day is going to be tough. I'm just going to go out and go fishing. That's all I can do.
These are just two interviews....and, there are plenty more where those two came from.
I have interviews with several other pros tonight, but unfortunately, the website only allows so many characters to be typed in one post, so I have to limit my responses.
I will have more interviews while we continue to cover the PWT event at Hudson, Wisconsin on the Mississippi & St. Croix Rivers this week.
We are still trying to make a webcast happen, and it's our goal to help give the PWT as much coverage, world wide, as we possibly can.
Stay tuned for more information tomorrow...:)
