I want to plan a trip to Lake of the Woods and would like some recommendations from people familiar with the lake. A friend and I would like to plan a trip in early June for walleye, small mouth and pike. We will be traveling with 3 children (who obviously need lots of bites to be satisfied!) that would love to fish "in Canada." Is there a hotel/resort that would be close enough to the border to fish both Minnnesota and Canada and offer various fishing opportunities - especially for some younger kids? I have personally been to Canada many times, but am unfamiliar with Lake of the Woods. Any suggestions would be a great help for me to begin planning this trip.
Thanks.

I've made a few trips to LOW and had several different guides. Several years ago I took my daughter who was 11 at the time. For the trip with my daughter I used Al Meline at Nestor Falls, Not far from International Falls. He pretty well baby sit my daughter for three days and left me to fish on my own. Needless to say she ended up catching more and bigger fish than I did. I was really pleased with him and would Highly reccommend for what you are wanting.
Al has a website if you are interested.

Good Luck,

Try Witch Bay or Split Rock. Both near Nestor Falls, Ont.

Try Youngs Bay resort at the NW angle. It is right on
the border, and offers walleye fishing in MN waters as well
as walleye, smallmouth, muskies etc... to the north in Canada.

There are literally dozens of places that fit your description. I would recommend One of the resorts on the east end near Nestor Falls. Arrowhead camp is a good bet because you are on Kakebekitchewan lake, but Lake of the Woods is right across the road. The crappies are excellent right out from the camp in early June, the smallmouth and pike fishing is good and the walleye fishing is pretty decent. If you want to cross over to LOW, just trailer your boat across the road to the boat ramp. On the LOW side you'll find muskie fishing and better walleye fishing.

Oh yea, if you stay at Arrowhead, they have a walk-in lake that the kids will just love.

Good luck.

All the suggestions so far are great, but if you want to stay close to the boarder try the Morson area. Nestor Falls is beautiful but a good 1.5 hours north of Baudette. 40 miles north of Baudette, the Morson area offers some of the best fishing around. The islands offer great protected fishing for all kinds of weather and the list of fish is what you listed.

Check out the area: http://www.morson.org

Witch Bay has a small lake within walking distance called Minnow Lake that is supposed to be an exceelent place for small children.

I've fished lake of the woods for the past 20 years. Best place I've found is Adrians Resort, which is at the mouth of the Rainy River as it dumps into Lake of the Woods. You have the opportunity to fish the river if conditions are rough, you can fish inside of Four Mile Bay and there is always the lake itself. The family that owns the resort is very helpful in getting their clients on fish. They have many clean/comfortable cabins, serve meals, have a small bar and a very friendy place... At the very least, check it out you'll be glad you did.

Good Luck to You
