I'll heading to lake erie the 2nd week in april for 9 days. Be fishing the Port Clinton area. Was ther 4 days last year and mostly fished crib reef area with jigs. Want to troll this year and was hoping for some pointers as to areas and presentation. I troll plugs and boards on reservoirs in so. dakota mostly so feel i have the right equip. I have a yarcraft 1895 storm so feel i have enough boat I,m traveling 850 miles so trying to utalize time as best as possible Also Iown a x-85 locater(which I like real well) but was considering a x15mt so would like some opinions whether the added investment would be a plus for me. i use the globial map 2000 so don't feel I need the gps cap. would really apprec. any pointers This is my first time on and glad I'm here. Good Fishing

Practice period for the PWT starts the 17th. You'll find all of them at one time or another in the general area north and east of the reef complex. ABCDE cans and all the way back to Mouse & Green. Big area, hunt em up,(how good a bird dog would you make?). Look for high scattered marks and know that there are active fish even higher. You should have a ball. I'm not in the tournament so you'll probably see me out there.
If you have specific questions, go to Boatohio, click on Boating Forums, Then on Ask The Expert. Good luck and bring a large cooler.

Gary,
I live about 10 minutes from Port Clinton, and will be out trolling the area (BIG AREA) mentioned by ETT. These fish could be anywhere in this big area after they spawn, and may move quite a bit from day to day. They are roaming the deeper water flats (28 to 33 feet) just North and East of the reef complex hunting and eating. What you want to look for are marks up off the bottom say from 18 feet on up in the water column. Ideal situation is these marks around 12-15 feet mixed in with pods of baitfish (local Captains call them baitballs). Also run some lines way up - top 5 feet of water. You won't mark these fish but give it a shot. For a starting point to narrow this huge area down - I'd start around "E" can and work up to the east of Niagara Reef staying in the deeper water. Check the fishing reports section on this website before heading out. There will be all kinds of posts. Also check ETT's BoatOhio site and also Dean Clifton's "Denied" page. www.cliftond.com
Also don't be obsessed with going really SLOW. I primarily troll with big mast & ski boards so I rarely troll slower than about 1.8 and usually at least 2mph. Sometimes in the spring it is almost comical as it looks like I'm doing laps around a lot of the guys that are obsessed with going really slow. Sometimes we need to slow down but often...speed kills. Channel 79 on your VHF radio is a good one to listen on as a lot of the trollers are on that one.
Good Luck and bring big coolers!

I will be going out to Erie the 19th and staying on Kelly's Island. Do any of you fish north of Kelly's east of the Bass Islands? We are there for the whole week, can I give you a holler on VHF to get the up-to date scoop,I am coming from WI and would really like to connect with someone who has the skinny on the bite.
Thanks,
RKG

RKG,
You have a good area in mind for that time of year. The winning PWT fish could likely be caught from the NW side of Kelleys on over to the Bass Islands if they are not taken in the other areas mentioned.
Check on the fishing reports page before you head to Erie for updates. Email me if you want as you get closer to your trip.
Good Luck,

Thanks for responding. It's great to have people out there who are willing to help out a fellow fisherman. Are you a PWT pro? I fish Winnebago alot in June so if I can return the favor for you or any other PWT fisherman I would be honored to trade info.Keep in touch.

I fished several of the PWT events as a pro and the areas discussed previously can all hold fish as they move from west to east. One area not discussed is "the beach". East of the reefs and in-shore (5-10' of water) you can troll with small boards and a variety of lures. We have traditionally picked the biggest fish of the year along that area. Talk to some locals when you get up there and they will help you out. I would pick some areas that are protected from the wind as alternates to open water. Erie can change in 10 minutes from nice to nasty so be prepared!

I would be shocked if you didn't see a number of WI plates while you are on Kelly's. Last yr we did well in mid April off the N side with slow trolled reef runner products running 6' to 24' over deep water. Early May we did well with 4 to 5 oz bouncers/spinners in deep water off the SW corner when strong NE and E winds kept us on the S and W sides of Kelly's for 3 days.
You'll have a great time.

HI,
It looks like the cheese heads are coming back.I remember the posts from last year and you guys did real good.
I'm interested in this place called the Beach. Is it between Kelly's and the Bass Islands or east of the reefs north of Kelly's. I've only been to Lake Erie twice and it seems to take a couple of days to find the fish and then the weather changes and you have to start over. Does anybody have a pattern they use after a blow out there?

After a blow - one of the keys is finding "clean" water. North of Kelleys to NW is one of first areas to clear usually. Thanks for the offer for info for your area. I've never been there - I'm too spoiled living on Erie. No I don't fish the PWT. Going to run some charters on Erie this year.
Good Luck and bring BIG coolers.

We don't have a closed season. Got way to many fish here...lol Sorry had to say that ! Last year we did regulate the amount you can take during the months of March and April to 4 instead of the normal 6. But does not close.
