What kind of boat is this motor on? I thiink you need to post this on an site that deals with electric motors.

I looked, but did not find any.
Here is the information that you need:
http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/motor_connection_diagrams.htm
It is likely that this motor has both high - 220volt, as well as low - 110 volt connections.
As long as the motor is single phase, go with the diagrams for that type motor.
Take care

Looks like an oldie!
From what I'm seeing on the tag, it is a 230 volt, single phase (not seeing any designation for dual/multi volt taps), 24 amp, 5 horse motor. If you'd shown a pic of the wires at the termination block it might be easier to help. Do any of the wires have number tags on them (ie: L1, L2 and so on) are all the wires the same color, etc?? There is usually (not always) a portion of the motor tag that will have this information on it, but typically said motor will be a 3-phase motor designed for multiple source voltage configurations.
Don't know what your plans are for the motor, or what it was used for prior, but you might load it in the back of a PU when you get the chance and let a commercial or industrial electrician take a look at it. A good ohm meter and couple of minutes, a good electrician could have it figured out for you.
Good luck!

Thanks, but that did not help, since several wires are not marked. Please see below.

Thanks. Out of the bottom of the motor is an opening and all 6 wires come out of this opening. They are all black and one is marked with "one', another "four", another "eight". Moving the wires and looking into the openings on the end of the motor housing I can see that two wires go to the two brushes. These two wires are not marked. These two wires were attached with a wire nut outside the motor. The other 6 wires when I wiggle them, they all appear to go into the windings. Does this help?

I have an ohm meter and know how to use it, but dont know what to look for concerning this motor..

With only some of the wires being tagged (marked) and all wires the same color, it's pretty difficult (for me) to explain different wiring configurations. I found this for you, which may or may not help, but they should be able to lead you in the right direction.

Thanks, I had found that before. The ajaxmotors server is down and I Think Ajax closed.

Any more ideas or should I scrap the mtr?

This blog might give you another clue:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Electric-Motors-3782/5-hp-motor-wiring.htm
Note the possible use 2 capacitors - i.e. a start capacitor (larger) as well as a run capacitor (smaller).
You should be able to use an ohmmeter to check out which wires are going to windings, and which to a switch.
You can also pull of the end plate to verify the destination of wires -
i.e. run windings, start windings, start switch, etc.
Take care
